Job Description:

Job Summary

Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis, and inducing (RVT required) and monitoring anesthesia. Under guidance of the Small Animal ER/CC Faculty, Shift Supervisors and Manager provide emergency and critical care nursing to small animal patients and technical support to clinicians, staff and students. Provide quasi-instruction to students. Provide temporary support to other VMTH departments as assigned. Provide facility maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

-Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

-Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.

-Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.

-Remain standing for extended periods of time.

-Bend and stoop to care for patients low to the ground.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

-Work occasional overtime; work weekends, evenings, holidays and variable hours. In emergency or illness situations, may work alternate shift.

-May be required to use a respirator during decontamination cleanings.

-This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

-May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

-Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.

-May work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

-Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

-Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

-Experience independently providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.

-Experience working in a small animal clinic as a veterinary assistant.

-Experience in assessing an emergent or critically ill patient's condition and initiate appropriate action.

-Experience calculating drug doses and administering medications.

-Experience using patient monitoring equipment (ECG, Invasive or non-invasive BP, CVP, ET-CO2, Pulse Oximeter, etc.)

-Knowledge of using common emergency and critical care therapies and procedures.

-Experience intubating a patient with an endotracheal tube and caring for patients with artificial airways.

Preferred:

-Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.

-Experience working in an emergency critical care setting as a veterinary assistant.

-Experience in the placement of a multi-lumen catheter in either a peripheral or central vein and utilize proper technique(s) to secure and maintain the catheter.

-Ability to perform the following laboratory test utilizing the appropriate analyzer: Blood gases, hematocrit, total protein, BUN, Glucose, Creatinine, electrolytes (serum and urine), activated clotting time, osmolality, colloid oncotic pressure, and lactate.
