Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) position is responsible for knowing his/her professional scope of practice as defined by the California Business and Professional Code. The MA performs clinical and administrative duties related to the delivery of patient care and student health services. Functions in accordance with Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) and University of California Office of the President (UCOP) policies, procedures, workflows, mandates, and care standards. This position is a 9-month, partial year career appointment, subject to a furlough period mid-June to mid-September and reduced time during academic quarter breaks subject, to operational needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
-Lift/assist in moving patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
-Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of pre-employment physical exam performed by Occupational Health Services.

-Position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

-Complete all required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include: blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogen training, and all additional programs/trainings required to meet Federal, State and University requirements.

-Complete mandatory training.

-May, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Proper personal protective equipment and training will be provided. Required to follow all health and safety policies, procedures, and workflows.

-Responsible for following all policies, procedures, and workflows as instructed.

-Work occasional varied lunch hours, overtime, and weekends per operational need or emergency.

-Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.

-Sign a statement of understanding of the Dependent Adult/Elder Abuse Reporting Requirement.

-UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
-Satisfactory completion of a formal Medical Assistant program pursuant to the Division of Allied Health Professions, or military training that is equivalent to an accredited Medical Assistant program.

-Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pharmacology appropriate to the Medical Assistant scope of practice within the state of California.

-Proficient in: administering intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, administer oral medications, performing point of care testing, collection of throat swabs, acting as a chaperone, EKGs, and measuring vital signs, including manual blood pressure, and recognizing abnormal vital signs.

-Ability to recognize allergic or anaphylactic reaction and take appropriate actions in emergent situations.

-Possess critical thinking skills and decisive judgment in a complex, fast-paced environment.

-Must be able to work within established timeframes with attention to detail and accuracy.

-Knowledge of standard vaccinations per CDC guidelines.

-Skills to handle emergency situations with composure and professionalism.

-Customer service and communication skills to interact with a wide variety of individuals including patients, co-workers and the general public.

-Skills to assess and prioritize duties and adjust to rapidly changing workflow.

-Understanding of HIPAA.

-Current BLS certification required (must be certified through the American Heart Association) or must be obtained within three months of employment.

Preferred:
-California Certified Medical Assistant current certification.

-Two years of previous practical experience as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient setting.
