Responsibilities

The Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate at Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in power systems engineering. Candidates for this position should have expertise in at least one of the following focus areas: (1) distribution systems, including distributed energy resources (DERs) modeling and control or distribution system management solutions to enable higher DER penetration, (2) microgrids, including design, control, or energy management system development, (3) transmission or bulk power system, including modeling of bulk power system generation technologies or expertise in transmission system stability, reliability, and resilience, (4) power electronics system design and power conversion systems, (5) dynamic and transient energy systems modeling. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ideation, planning, coordination, and implementation of power systems projects. Experience with power system testing using digital real-time simulation environments and using power and/or controller hardware-in-the-loop is a plus.

The candidate should have prior experience working both individually and in teams in a fast-paced, high-tempo research environment. Demonstrated ability to lead the design and implementation of research projects is required. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are also required.

Knowledge of one or multiple programing languages and software used for power and energy systems modeling and simulation are a plus. Examples include: RSCAD, PSCAD, Python, Matlab and Simulink, OpenDSS, CYME, PSS/E, PSLF.

EES&T's role and mission is to develop and advance clean, smart, and secure energy systems essential to national security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. It embodies science and engineering functions that contribute enabling technologies for today's national energy portfolio. It also augments the country's technical ability to collaborate on and overcome critical energy and water challenges that already impact tomorrow's energy choices. This position supports and integrates actions, activities, projects, & initiatives of the EES&T Directorate's Integrated Mission Plan and other INL research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) efforts.

The candidate should have a PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field. Ph.D. requirements must be complete by commencement of appointment and within the previous five years.

Demonstrated technical understanding, research collaborations, and professional recognition through a developing publication record in one or more of the following technical research related areas: distribution systems, transmission systems, microgrid design, power electronics, dynamic and transient energy systems, modeling and simulation of complex systems, advanced controls, and analysis involving interaction of multiple physical systems.

The candidate should also have demonstrated proposal writing and research project execution experience.

The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is highly desired.
