Purpose
The Facility and Systems Security (FSS) Group within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) seeks applications for an R&D Staff Member position focused on the application and development of nuclear security technologies.

FSS specializes in the research and development, testing and evaluation, and international implementation of security science and technology to aid in the protection, control, accountability of nuclear materials facilities, inventories, and associated assets. The group collaborates with staff and user facilities within ORNL to ensure the full expertise of nuclear security and nonproliferation are applied to meet sponsor needs, international treaty obligations and agreements, and facility security needs. FSS is seeking to leverage this expertise to advance the state of the art of the protection of nuclear assets. As a result, FSS is expanding efforts to conduct technological advances in the ability to detect, deter, prevent, and respond to potential adversarial actions related to nuclear material assets. Of particular interest is the integration of approaches with cutting-edge technologies such as additive manufacturing, unmanned systems (aerial, terrestrial, and marine systems) and other unique applications to reduce the cost and footprint of nuclear security while increasing the level of security. Also envisioned is the advancement of risk management sciences to facilitate the integration of engineered systems with the threat posed by insider the other human behaviors to better understand a facilities threat, vulnerabilities, and consequences of a malevolent actor.


Major Duties / Responsibilities
The incumbent in this position will focus on design, development, testing, and evaluation of systems designed to detect nuclear material flows, adversarial attempts to steal or sabotage nuclear assets, and insider threat actions. The ideal candidate will be expected to serve as a thought-leader in developing and applying advanced science and engineering principles to develop next-generation detection, delay, prevention, and response capabilities. This effort will support the multiple nuclear (and potentially non-nuclear) security sponsors to include the NNSA's Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, DOE's Offices of Science, Environmental Management, and Nuclear Energy, and other sponsors in nuclear industry.

The successful candidate will be required to lead through effective collaboration to develop advanced technologies, concepts, and approaches. Additionally, the position requires the ability to develop and maintain strong collaboration with the National Security Sciences Directorate's broader security capabilities as well as various cross-cutting capabilities across the ORNL enterprise. Therefore, the ideal candidate should have experience working in a dynamic team environment. The position is expected to provide thought leadership in cross-cutting technologies and be able to produce high-impact science delivered in the form of peer-reviewed journal articles as well as conference and university engagements. Demonstrated excellent communications skills are required.


Basic Requirements:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
- 6 or more years' experience in Nuclear Security Technology R&D for a PhD or 12 or more years for an MS
- Demonstrated record of publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals
- Expertise in Vulnerability Assessments of Security Technologies, Nuclear Security Systems Analysis, Nuclear Security Engineering design, or other R&D focus in nuclear facility security space, both at the domestic and international levels.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills


Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement dug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
