Overview
The Cybersecurity Research Group in the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for The Distinguished R&D Staff position. The position affords the unique opportunity to work with a group of talented R&D professionals and provide leadership, vision, and a personal example of research excellence.
The Cybersecurity Research Group (CyR) conducts research and development to protect our nation's critical computer systems and networks, using cyber defense methods driven by artificial intelligence and machine-learning. Recent examples of CyR Group research include ML-based network and user emulation to enable large-scale experiments of network defense tools, and operations research of security analysts.

The National Security Sciences Directorate's research and development programs confront some of the nation's most difficult security challenges and adversaries. The Directorate houses S&T leadership in cybersecurity and cyber-physical resiliency, data analytics, geospatial science and technology, nuclear nonproliferation, and high-performance computing for sensitive national security missions. The Laboratory offers exceptional facilities and collaboration opportunities with a wide array or leading researchers in other areas at the lab, such as nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering, applied materials, advanced manufacturing, biosecurity, transportation, and computing. Because multi-disciplinary research is highly encouraged, cross-laboratory teams are at work on solutions to complex security threats to public safety, national defense, energy infrastructure, and the economy.

The Distinguished Staff Member will bring years of research and leadership experience and use it to establish a research vision to move the group toward global excellence. CyR seeks a staff member who can be a resource for ongoing research, a mentor to younger staff, and can contribute to the formation of high-functioning research teams by involvement in hiring decisions. It is critical that the Distinguished Staff Member possess the ability to demonstrate both passion and leadership in pursuing research goals as an example to the group.

The position will report to the Group Leader, and work closely with the Section Head to move the vision toward reality.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop a vision and implement a research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects
- Initiate, lead and perform independent and impactful R&D
- Lead program development activities through sponsor engagements, preparation of proposals and white papers, and other program development activities.
- Develop and implement plans to exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
- Lead by example, exercising scientific integrity in proposing, performing, and communicating research.
- Lead by example to ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures.
- Exemplify a commitment to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL.
- Advance the reputation and standing of the group by establishing collaborations, professional society leadership and involvement, and by organizing technical events.
- Excel when working in multi-disciplinary teams, including not only members of different skill sets, but of varying levels of experience.


Basic Requirements:
- Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of 12 years relevant experience, an M.S. with a minimum of 16 years experience, B.S. with 20 years experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated track record in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the network and cyber systems security community.
- Experience working for, or collaborating with, DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D sponsor organizations).


Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. The holder of this position may be subject to random polygraph testing.
