Overview

The Learning Systems Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist to lead and develop research in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning including reinforcement learning, nature inspired algorithms, deep learning, and natural language processing. We are specifically interested in research focused on the development of new algorithms and methods that can be used to analyze large and complex scientific data using novel computer architectures such as high performance, neuromorphic, and quantum computing.

This position is part of the Data and AI Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM). The Data and AI Section researches and develops methods to manage and gain knowledge from scientific data in support of DOE and ORNL missions. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

As a senior research staff member, you will have the opportunity to help solve some of the most challenging problems this country faces. You will lead and perform groundbreaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing groundbreaking results.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Lead and conduct basic and applied research in artificial intelligence and machine learning to further scientific discovery.

- Collaborate with top researchers and scientists on challenging national scale problems.

- Publish research results in top computer science conferences and journals.

- Lead research and program development/funding activities.

- Mentor students, postdocs and other early career research scientists.

Basic Qualifications

- Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field.

- Outstanding publication track record.

- 6+ years of relevant research experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning or data analytics, outside of Ph.D.

- Hands on experience with the latest artificial intelligence and machine learning libraries.

- Programming experience in one or more of the following languages: C, C++, Java, and/or Python.

Preferred Qualifications

- Ability to collaborate with a wide range of scientists, engineers, and program managers.

- Experience with high performance computing and novel computing architectures.

- Ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written).
