Requisition Summary


PACCAR’s Technical Center, which serves both Kenworth and Peterbilt, has an opening for a user interface designer.  We need an expert in digital graphics UI (both static and motion animation) with a healthy overlap in UX skills.  In this position, you will be supporting the creation of in-cab display content for heavy and medium duty trucks.  You will be on the leading edge of defining future user interfaces in trucking, including transition to electrical power trains, incorporation of Advanced Driver Assistive Technology (ADAS), integrating multiple forms of infotainment / communication applications, and the transition to higher levels of automation.  The focus of this job is for design of in-vehicle interfaces and not desktop, mobile phone, or web based HMI.  Sensitivity to the needs of designing for a driver is paramount.  The position ideally will be filled with someone experienced in the domain of embedded system UX specific to automotive applications.  We are a small team and every member will need the ability to flex across multiple traditional UX / UI / User Test and documentation roles.  Effective communication and organizational skills will be a critical.

Division Information


The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing. The Technical Center is located in the Skagit Valley about 65 miles north of Seattle, Washington. 

Job Functions / Responsibilities



  • Serve as the lead user interaction designer in a small team working with a UX lead.  Iterate digital artwork from initial design theme generation up towards full pixel-perfect final artwork on digital display type interfaces.  Work in both static images and motion graphics.

  • Be responsive to the Division Design Directors helping craft, convey, and implement the specific Peterbilt and Kenworth themes. 

  • Establish styling definition methodology and manage the documentation process for conveying design details to remote engineering and implementation teams.    

  • Assist in the preparation of artwork for prototypes to be used in vehicle testing, which might include working closely with the usability test engineer and software implementation team.

  • Collaborate with the rest of the UX team, Industrial Design, Vehicle Integration Engineers, Software Engineering, Product Planning, and Program Managers.

  • Stay abreast of UX/UI trends and look for creative ideas / inspiration from parallel analogous worlds.  Willingness to learn new skills, tools and methods.

  • Be a systems level thinker while not missing the details.  Be a positive contributor to the team dynamic. 

Qualifications



  • Five+ years designing effective user interface functionality for automotive applications (or an analogous industry), focused on UI skills and some balance of UX or usability testing.  Deep familiarity and affinity to the User Centered Design philosophy and process.  Expertise in graphic design, motion graphics, digital art; sensitivity to typography, color, layout, and a general awareness of materials/textures.  The ideal candidate will have the right experience level to ‘hit the ground running’ to design instrumentation interfaces and in-vehicle display interactions if given only higher level guidance.

  • Expert-level experience with the appropriate software tools for interface creation including Adobe Creative Cloud suit of tools; Photoshop, Illustrator, Xd, After Effects, Premiere Pro, etc.  Additional skills or tool chain experience including: deep font knowledge, wire framing or software prototyping tools such as: Axure RP, Balsamiq, Unity, Unreal, Godot, HTML, etc.  Familiarity with designing to accommodate front end development tools such as Kanzi, QT, or others.

  • High quality interpersonal skills and team-work environment sensitivity.  Desire to contribute to a fun working group culture that is not afraid of tackling tough challenges.  Appreciate an environment with a high level of stability and low-turnover rate.

  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale to other members of the design, development and leadership teams. 

  • Ability to manage time wisely across projects and competing priorities, meet agreed upon deadlines, and be accountable for work, even in a fluid environment with shifting priorities.

  • Proficiency in typical office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Visio, etc.  Proficient in a Windows operating system environment. 

Education



  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in a field related to the job described above; Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Visual Design in Computing, Interface Design, Ergonomics / Human Factors, Usability Engineering, etc.  Or at a minimum similar vocational training that developed design skills coupled with a very strong experience base and demonstrated capability; ideally with certification-based documentation of acquired skills or training. 

  • Ability to providea work portfolio that demonstrates both static and motion graphics design history that shows off your creative process and also skill level.  Provide examples of methods used to communicate design intent to others.  Be prepared to demonstrate skills first hand during an interview.
