Purpose of Position

Assist the Safety Manager in creating a Safety First environment in all daily operations while maintaining and keeping in accordance with contractual obligations and National Express policies and procedures. Communicate clearly, professionally and in a timely manner with employees. Represent National Express to its customers and the public in a professional, courteous and serving manner. Work within the National Express Mission, Vision and Values policy framework.

This position requires the use of independent judgement regarding the exercise of the authority to hire, transfer, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward and discipline other company employees, and the responsibility to direct them, to adjust their grievances and/or to effectively recommend such actions.

Primary Job Functions


  • Provide a safe and secure public transportation system for all customers utilizing the service.


  • Supervise and direct the daily operational activities of Drivers, Window Dispatchers and Safety Supervisors; make spontaneous decisions; communicate via two-way radio, telephone, fax and writings.


  • Ensure safety performance metric and goals are met.


  • Ensure safety/road supervision is providing adequate support to the operators, and file all paperwork in a timely manner.


  • Support the location safety initiatives and helps foster the building of our safety culture.


  • Consistent implementation and maintenance of Company and MBTA-defined safety and training processes and systems, including enforcement and administration of drug and alcohol policy.


  • Review monthly KPI results (vehicle accident and work-related injury performance) determining why variances occur and identify preventative measures in response to each variance.


  • Develop and implement safety communication and training programs.


  • Attend and present at monthly safety meetings, start-up meetings and monthly safety committee meetings.


  • Investigate Injury and Accidents and report in a timely manner, including on scene investigation to determine immediate course of action and to determine root cause(s) and preventative measures to prevent recurrence.


  • Administer DriveCam program including coaching, counseling and disciplining of drivers as required.


  • Work with Operations to ensure drivers are performing assigned duties correctly and safely and that all job specifications are met.


  • Monitor service through visual checks and other means as available.


  • Maintain accurate records in order to recall details of events.


  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing with all levels of personnel.


  • Ensure all paperwork (accidents, incidents, first report of injury, etc.) is timely, legible, complete and distributed as required.


  • Maintains and demonstrates a helpful, positive, and pleasant attitude toward fellow coworkers, the customer, and National Express.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications

    Essential Education, Knowledge and Skills


  • Ability to read, comprehend and understand contracts, maps, policies and procedures.


  • Possess basic mathematics skills.


  • Possess basic computer skills.


  • Possess organization, communication and interpersonal skills necessary to answer general inquiries and interact with employees, customers and the public.


  • Be competent in the coordination, counseling, supervision and disciplining of assigned personnel.


  • Possess ability to work efficiently and patiently under pressure and stressful conditions.


  • Possess ability to quickly analyze a situation and provide timely solution(s).


  • Working Conditions and Demands

    Normal office environment with little discomfort due to noise, temperature or dust. Requires performing on-the road at all hours that The Ride is providing service. Varying shift schedules include early morning, evening and weekend assignments. When applicable, hazards as described in Driver job description. Requires individual to work well in a fast paced environment.
