You will be a key member of the Medtronic Engineering team responsible for contributing to the development of Medtronic's Robotic Assisted Surgery platform.

The Minimally Invasive Therapies Group (MITG) strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. SURGICAL INNOVATIONS sets the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services.
A Day in the Life:
Candidate will be working in the R&D department and will build experience in the verification/validation process of medical devices. Candidate will have independent roles during the planning, execution and reporting of evaluations of a medical device to provide evidence for the safety and effectiveness of the device.
You will: Technical Skills-


  • Establish and optimize test methods and protocols for studies.
  • Plan logistics of wet lab studies.
  • Execute studies: bench top, simulated tissue and wet lab studies utilizing surgeons, PAs, nurses as subject matter experts to gather feedback on the performance of the test device.
Customer Focus-

  • Observe robotic and/or laparoscopic surgeries in hospital settings.
  • Work closely with other medical professionals, such as doctors, PAs and nurses to understand customer needs.
  • Conduct literature research to stay abreast in field.
Work Well with Others:

  • Work cooperatively with others as part of a team.
  • Collaborate with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.
Communication Skills (written and oral):

  • Prepare full documentation in accordance with relevant internal SOPs and development process controls.
  • Compile results from ex vivo and/or wet lab studies in form of comprehensive reports.
  • Prepare posters and technical papers to be presented at technical and/or clinical conferences.
  • Present findings to peers, leadership team, surgeons, customers, and at society meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Must haves: Minimum requirements:


  • Education in Biomedical Engineering field (or related engineering field) with a Master's degree (minimum of 3.2/4.0 GPA) plus a minimum of 1-year of experience* OR Bachelor's degree (minimum of 3.2/4.0 GPA) plus a minimum of 2-years of experience*.
*Professional experience in a medical device industry with exposure and knowledge of product development process of a robotic surgical device.

  • Experience with the application and use of a variety of medical devices during minimal invasive surgery.
  • Needs to possess strong knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Experience with writing protocols and reports for conducting pre-clinical labs and engineering studies during the pre/validation stage of a medical device.
  • Experience using a variety of office, engineering and project management software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, OneNote, SharePoint, PowerPoint, etc.), JIRA, JAMMA and Agile.
Nice to haves:

  • Knowledge of regulatory pathways of medical devices and experience on gathering evidence for such.
  • Knowledge of pre-clinical large animal models anatomy.
  • Detail-oriented with strong commitment to quality and to the workplace with the ability to efficiently multitask.
  • Strong analytical, communications (both oral and written forms) and organizational skills.
Working Conditions:
  • Standard office setting, surgical lab, operating room, pilot lab, external research organizations, supplier visits, limited travel as required.


  • Based in the greater New Haven, CT area, USA


  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week Monday-Friday. Candidate will be expected to work during weekends as needed.


  • Must be willing and able to travel (up 25%to 40%) of the time primarily between New England facilities via car or train. Domestic travel will be needed periodically.
