Under supervision of the Laboratory Director of Flow Cytometry, the Technical Director of Immunopathology and the Supervisor of Immunopathology, the technologist is required to perform, develop and successfully implement various multiparameter immunofluorescent tests using flow cytometry to provide the hematopathology and medical staff with critical information that directly affects patient diagnoses and treatment regimens.
The technologist is mainly involved in processing specimens from patients with suspected or previously diagnosed leukemia, lymphoma or immunodeficiencies. Additionally, the technologist will perform stem cell analysis, T-cell subset analysis, DNA ploidy evaluation in addition to a variety of other tests. These specimens are variously obtained from lymph node, bone marrow, fine needle aspirate, blood and cerebral spinal fluids. The process includes specimen and antibody panel preparation, analysis on the flow cytometer as well as result analysis and transcription. The technologist works with supervision in choosing and following an appropriate monoclonal antibody panel and test for each case.
The individual hired in this position as a Medical Technologist I or II will help in the execution of day-to-day work for the diagnostic flow cytometry laboratory. Additional duties include operation and documentation of maintenance of all laboratory equipment including calibration of flow cytometry instrument, performing relevant quality control and also participating in proficiency testing. Technologists in the laboratory also have the opportunity to develop and implement new and improved techniques and protocols to ensure high quality results. The technologist actively participates in teaching and training of pathology residents and fellows as well as other individual and groups interested in pursuing independent research/training in flow cytometry. Standard safety precautions are followed in handling all specimens, due to their potentially infectious nature.
The Medical Technologist assists in the process of maintaining and updating the laboratory manual and maintenance of documentation in accordance with the Joint Commission and hospital regulations. Hours require an on-call rotation as well as occasional evening and weekend attendance in laboratory.
Additional skills and abilities required include:
* Familiarity with hematology, immunology and computers/software
* Knowledge of making dilutions from stock solutions, proper handling procedure of chemicals and utilizing good laboratory techniques
* Must be able to perform mathematical calculations
* Must be able to read/write English.
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills
* Good attention to detail and problem solving
* Must be organized and capable of following protocols and have ability to devise or adapt techniques if needed
* Good hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity
* Ability to work well with others.
Minimum of B.S. or B.A. Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or equivalent with ASCP certification preferred, with ideally 2-3 years of flow cytometry or other clinical laboratory experience.
