Overview


INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW:

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ("Dana-Farber" or "DFCI") in Boston, Massachusetts is a world-class, Harvard-affiliated cancer research and patient care institute. Dana-Farber seeks a Business Development (BD) Associate who will support Dana-Farber's clinical care, research, and education missions. He/she will work with the broader Innovation BD team to form strategic alliances based on DFCI's research and care delivery, develop research and plans for deploying and monetizing DFCI's know-how and intellectual capital, and identify novel opportunities for enhancing research funding through relationships with industry partners. DFCI's approach for actively engaging industry provides room to innovate in therapeutics, technology, and clinical care.

The BD Associate will report to the Business Development Manager in the Innovation Office (the Belfer Officer for Dana-Farber Innovations / BODFI) and work closely with the Senior Director and the Business Development & Marketing team to achieve these broad goals. Additionally, the BD Associate will work closely with other members of the Innovation Office and the Office for General Counsel (OGC) to identify, manage and accelerate the translation of biological discoveries into novel therapies.

The BD Associate will have experience in healthcare or life sciences, successfully contributing to her/his organization's mission and financial health and collaborating in matrixed and decentralized organizations.

The BD Associate will be effective in contributing to the success of Dana-Farber's scientists and clinicians and will derive personal and professional satisfaction from contributing to Dana-Farber's mission and success.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an exceptional opportunity for the BD Associate to play an important role in Dana-Farber's technology commercialization and business development efforts as a member of the Innovation Office helping to establish partnerships based on Dana-Farber's know-how, care models, and intellectual property and expand the impact of DFCI's world-class research and care. As a member of the Business Development Team, the BD Associate will help identify, characterize, and track potential technologies developed by DFCI investigators, along with the research interests and partnership opportunities of industry players and investors.

The Business Development team's work falls into several areas:


  • Upping Dana-Farber's game working with industry. This includes developing effective business processes for presenting DFCI technologies to industry and generating support for research programs-building a pipeline of potential discoveries to market will be a natural outgrowth of this effort. The goal of this work is to identify new funding, in-kind support, and/or collaborative opportunities to accelerate delivery of new healthcare solutions to patients.

  • A second focus of activity is internally focused with DCFI's scientific staff and licensing team to identify and develop new business and partnering opportunities. This entails assessing commercial potential and market opportunity for discoveries and driving the work to ascertain the best method for bringing the technologies to market, e.g., licensing, new company creation, partnership with an established commercial firm, or a combination of these alternatives. The goal is to develop a robust pipeline of partnering and alliance opportunities so several significant deals can be completed each year.

  • Third, the BD Team leads Dana-Farber's efforts to initiate and sustain partnerships with biotech and pharmaceutical companies and develop long-term affiliations with major companies which have the potential to diversify funding streams and provide support to investigators.

  • Fourth, the BD Team works closely with DFCI investigators on the commercialization of novel technologies. This includes developing business plans and pitch decks and providing strategic advice on the commercialization of technologies and scientific discoveries in research labs.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position works closely with both the Business Development Manager and Senior Director of Business Development; duties and responsibilities include:


  • Supporting internal and external business development initiatives.

  • Assisting BD Manager and Senior Director with research and analysis to refine and drive BD strategy.

  • Research and compile information about the evolving scientific landscape to identify valuable commercial initiatives.

  • Supporting the marketing and communication around new business opportunities by working with DFCI scientific and clinical teams in the Innovation Office, as well as Innovation marketing team members.

  • Helping build and maintain a BD pipeline with potential partnering prospects across life sciences, device companies, digital health, and technology organizations. This includes the mapping and tracking of internal technologies and strategic interests of external parties.

  • Research and compile information on innovative revenue streams in academia and for-profit/industry partners.

  • Establishing rapport with the licensing team, faculty, and other internal stakeholders related to business development.

  • Providing support to BD Manager on potential negotiations of agreements for the licensing team associated with commericializable assets.

  • Providing support around DFCI's Business Development Council's monthly meetings

  • Drafting, reviewing, and managing technology profiles, non-confidential summaries, and other external marketing materials (including the review and coordination of Innovation newsletters and website material with the Marketing & BD Analyst).

  • Tracking and understanding the needs of investigators and projects seeking funding via industry sponsored and/or academic requests for proposals.

  • Assisting in assessment of commercial potential and market opportunity of new inventions coming from DFCI labs including assessing the competitive landscape in conjunction with OGC and performing due diligence and market research with the goal of identifying potential licensees and industry partners for Dana-Farber technologies.

  • Assists in relationship management with current/future external partners; developing understanding of company interests and helping to identify and facilitate appropriate partnership opportunities.

  • Creating financial models associated with potential commercialized assets for monetization or spin-offs.

  • Supporting development and implementation of innovative strategies for marketing and licensing of Dana-Farber technologies and inventions.

  • Assessing scientific overlap with potential investments of industry partners with new/emerging DFCI technologies.

  • Organizing and supporting external business development efforts at major clinical and commercial partnering meetings and events.

  • Working closely with DFCI investigators and Innovation colleagues to develop business materials in support of licensing or startup opportunities.

  • Assessing potential equity as related to acquisitions of assets, new cos or startups, etc.

  • Train Innovation Interns on business processes and internal systems.

  • Performing other related duties as needed and assigned.




Qualifications


MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Candidate should either have an advanced scientific degree (PhD or MD) with 1-2 years of prior experience or have 3-4 years of busines experience in healthcare or life sciences.

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of prior experience and a business background or degree (MBA) is a plus.

  • Existing relationships within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and/or technology industries preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


  • Aptitude to prioritize projects and tasks.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Outstanding oral, written, communication, and analytical skills are required. Must be able to independently write scientific and business documents and communicate proactively.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to take a proactive approach to problem solving.

  • Organized, with ability to concurrently manage/coordinate multiple opportunities and relationships with potentially competing deadlines.

  • Ability to work successfully with internal and external stakeholders (scientists, clinicians, administrators, executives, etc.).

  • Highly-proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to effectively utilize and manage databases.

This is a full time, 40 hour per week position.
