A Brief Summary of This Position:

This is an individual contributor position responsible for examining the quality of raw materials, parts, components, and assemblies to established specifications and standards. The CWI Inspector performs visual and dimensional inspections and tests on materials and components as received from internal and external processes

Essential Functions:


  • This position reports into the Operations Manager.

  • Observe operating activities throughout all product areas; making recommendations, developing action plans and following up to ensure that action plans are effectively implemented.

  • Conduct internal quality audit of individual departments.

  • Assist department supervisors evaluate field problem data and develop action plans to prevent causes of problems.

  • Record improvements, gaps, and deviations in aluminum scrap management.

  • Analyze/evaluate manufacturing processes to identify improvement opportunities and review new processes for possible integration into systems.

  • Perform data gathering, analysis, and distribution of all quality related data.

  • Coordinates regulatory compliance, material test reports, and third party inspections.

  • Meets quality requirements and keeps peers informed of unplanned deviations from schedule.

  • Responsible for managing Elkhart's AISC program.

  • Inspects complicated assemblies, subassemblies, and/or pieces requiring knowledge of functioning and interrelationships.

  • Reads and interprets complicated blueprints and specification.

  • Responsible for the documenting and maintaining welder continuity records.

  • Serves as direct contact for third party inspectors, agencies, etc.

  • Responsible for writing PQRs and WPS's.

  • Other duties as required/assigned.


Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):


  • CWI Certification is required.

  • Three to Five years in a manufacturing quality/inspector role.

  • Working knowledge of AISC and aluminum welding.

  • Knowledgeable with different welding processes used in both practical and technical application, be familiar with Q.A. work instructions, ASTM, Aluminum industry standards, ASTM, Aluminum industry standards D1.2 and divisional specification.

  • Functional understanding of manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, heat treating, metal forming, etc.

  • Manage Elkhart's Quality Program in accordance with the quality manual.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints/ specifications.

  • Ability to read, operate, and interpret various precision measuring equipment, such as micrometers, calipers and ultrasound.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to persuade others to change and adapt to new processes.

  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.

  • Valid Driver's License.


Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:


  • Associate's degree in engineering and/or related discipline.

  • NDT Certification

  • Experience with lean manufacturing processes.

  • High degree of accuracy.

  • Strong Mathematical aptitude, ability to read blueprints, and a working knowledge of manufacturing processes.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office, shipping area and all areas of the plant which are producing product line for the company. There is a relatively constant exposure to somewhat disagreeable work conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels. Work conditions vary throughout the week depending on the area of the plant the quality technician is assigned to work in. There will be visits to both indoor and outdoor locations during all seasons of the year. When necessary, the quality technician must be willing and able to travel to supplier's factories and other Valmont site when needed for business needs (up to 5%, domestic only). There is no international travel required for this position. The work environment can be fast-paced and demanding at times.

Many of the tasks are physical and the CWI Inspector has to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. although the most frequent amount of weight lifted is 20 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
