Job Description:

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a qualified Research Scientist to assist with cancer biology research in the laboratory of Dr. Yvonne Chao. The Research Scientist will work closely with the principal investigator to study the role of non-coding RNAs in cancer metastasis from lymph nodes as well as develop models for studying the lymph node microenvironment in cancer. A Doctoral degree in a biology-related field is required as well as at least three years of post-graduate research experience. An advanced understanding and experience with standard molecular biology, cell biology, and tissue culture methods is desired as is prior experience with mouse work.

The Research Scientist will be expected to perform and conceptualize experiments on several projects focused on understanding mechanisms of lymph node metastasis in cancer. This will include data collection, and analysis of basic molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR amplification, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, and gene transfer or editing of cancer cell lines. The position will also entail work with mouse models of cancer metastasis that require IV and orthotopic injections. The Research Scientist will also help to design and develop new experimental protocols to study the lymph node microenvironment. They may be expected to participate in the preparation of writing manuscripts and grants. The Research Scientist will also assist in maintaining lab inventories, ordering supplies, and supervising postdocs, graduate students, and training support staff. Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must.
Should have extensive lab experience with conceptualizing and performing experiments that will include molecular techniques such as DNA, RNA and protein analysis, cell culture, and related molecular biology assays. Prior animal experience with therapeutics and cancer metastasis models is desired. Prior experience with supervising and teaching is also desired.
