 INFLUENZA POPULATION-BASED SURVEILLANCE PROJECT INTERMITTENT EPIDEMIOLOGIST

This is an essential member of the agency epidemiology workforce, critical to support timely reporting of COVID-hospitalization data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) project. This data helps inform the severity and duration of the pandemic and target resources, messages and interventions.

 

Official Position Description

75% - Investigates, collects and analyzes endemic or epidemic situations of influenza and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) through data collection, epidemiological studies, onsite visits and appropriate statistical analysis and methods: coordinates with hospitals, laboratories and Bureau of Infectious Disease (BID) staff to conduct the Influenza Population-Based Hospitalization Surveillance Project (IHSP) and/or Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) activities; collects data for the IHSP; makes field visits to abstract epidemiologic health data from confidential medical records of hospitals, clinics, physician offices and/or collects data through interview of health care provider or affected party; analyzes surveillance or study data using statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, ArcGIS); interprets statistical findings and reaches conclusions regarding causes, spread, and prevention of influenza; monitors the process of specimen collection, delivery to a laboratory, and reporting of results for the IHSP and/or COVID-NET; assists the Influenza Surveillance Coordinator with statewide influenza surveillance activities.

 

5% - Operates a personal computer (PC) on a computer network to access data, conduct statistical analysis, and produce reports; prepares data for analysis; assigns appropriate codes to data and maps cases using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) to facilitate data analysis; conducts and coordinates electronic data transmission between data files, databases, and data users; updates and modifies software applications and database structures as needed; creates reports within computer software to be run by others.

 

5% - Writes and/or edits reports and recommendations from analysis of data; prepares graphic presentations of data for inclusion in reports or for display

 

15% - Explains surveillance procedures, epidemiologic methods and analysis findings to health care providers, public health professionals and the general public; provides consultation to public health professionals and health care providers in planning and carrying out surveillance and epidemiologic studies and in the use of epidemiologic software; prepares and makes presentations to health professionals and the general public; distributes data to other programs within ODH, to other agencies, and to the general public, represents the IHSP at meetings, trainings, or conferences as assigned. As assigned, serves as a member of a disaster recovery/business resumption team, incident response team, or similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Completion of graduate core program in public health or preventive medicine; 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in use of statistical computer software packages; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in epidemiology; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in physiology; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in statistics; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in human relations; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing; 6 mos. exp. working in research or specific laboratory identifying or researching infectious or chronic diseases &/or related environmental health problems; must be able to provide own transportation.

OR

2. 6 mos. exp. as Epidemiology Investigator 1, 65761; must be able to provide own transportation.

OR

3. Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
