Job Summary:
In a career as a Child Life Supervisor, you join us in changing the way America cares for children and families. In this role, responsible supervision, Staff Development and evaluation of BTNRH Child Life Staff. Coordinates the volunteer program at BTNRH. Coordinates employee special events for the Hospital and Clinics.
Schedule: Full Time, Monday- Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm. Hours may vary. Needs to be flexible. Location: Boys Town Nation Research Hospital- West & East Locations.
Responsibilities:


  • Assesses the emotional needs of patients and families to determine support needed during medical experiences; provides age appropriate preparation for hospitalization procedures including surgeries.

  • Utilizes developmentally appropriate methods of preparing children and families for surgical procedures and diagnostic treatments to promote a positive learning and positive emotional experience during medical treatment.

  • Provides a resource check-out system, uses available patient education tapes, provides play preparation for children, assures information is given to parents on how to prepare themselves.

  • Institutes an individual program of activity including medical play and behavior modification plans to minimize behavior problems and regression for hospitalized children and children seen frequently for clinic visits that are traumatic for the child or family.

  • Maintains and equips playrooms for the hospital. Removes broken equipment.

  • Serves as a resource for clinics. Makes suggestions about toys, quality and where to buy.

  • Recognizes anxiety of parents and assists them in adjusting to the hospitalization of their child or coping with reoccurring medical procedures. Maintains a library of articles and books pertaining to the emotional care of hospitalized children and families for the use of the pediatric staff, families of children and students, sleep lab or volunteers. Resource to clinics and sleep lab, etc.

  • Provides information to parents, nursing staff, and medical staff, written and verbal, on common signs of stress in children at each developmental level and gives suggestions on how to handle stresses.

  • Plans special events such as Holiday Parties for employees and the deaf and hard of hearing community.

  • Directs and evaluates the continuing development and quality improvement of the child life program and writes or approves policies that are appropriate.

  • Responsible for development of a budget and for resource allocation for the child life program.

  • Responsible for the supervision, training and evaluation of the child life staff.

  • Participates in associations whose concerns are related to the activities of the department (national). Assists in preparation and dissemination of public relations information concerning the departments philosophy, program and activities.

  • Recommends consults/referrals when patient needs are beyond the scope of the Child Development Program.

  • Other Duties: This job description incorporates the essential functions and duties required for this position. However, other duties may be required and assigned at times and as determined by a supervisor in order to meet the needs of the organization.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Child Development Specialty and "Certification by the Child Life Certification Commission."

  • Elementary education or a related field, preferred.

  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, staff and community is a necessity.

  • Must have five years of Child Development experience.
