Position Purpose

The Surgery Technician plays an integral role in the advanced veterinary care provided by Central Texas Veterinary Surgery. This role goes hand in hand with our purpose statement of enhancing the quality of life for our patients.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

All duties performed under the responsible supervision of a licensed veterinarian as specified in the Texas Administrative Code of the Texas Veterinary Medical Board.

• Restrain animals for examinations, procedures, and treatments.


• Prepare prescriptions as ordered by the doctor: Appropriate container, labeling, directions, and warnings.


• Administer medications (oral, injectable, topical, etc.) as prescribed by the doctor.


• Perform medical treatments, check and place IV catheters, and feed patients.


• Perform venipuncture.


• Perform laboratory procedures and prepare specimens being sent to outside laboratories.


• Set up instruments and equipment needed for surgical and anesthetic procedures.


• Knowledge of names and locations of all instruments and equipment used in surgery.


• Prepare patient for surgery: Place IV catheter, induce anesthesia, intubate, clip, clean, and scrub.


• Monitor anesthesia, patients recovering post-operatively, and vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, SpO2, CO2, BP, and ECG.


• Perform radiography.


• Scrub in and assist in surgery as needed.


• Perform suture and staple removal.


• Clean, wrap and sterilize surgical packs, gowns, and drapes.


• Provide basic care: feeding, bathing, nail trims, expression of anal sacs as needed.


• Maintain cleanliness and order in work areas.


• Perform inventory, restocking and kennel duties as required.

Special Position Requirements

Overtime and Saturdays may be required. On-call rotation for weekends and holidays may be required.

Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, talk, and listen; may require extended periods of time on feet. Use hands to manipulate, handle, feel or reach with hands and arms. Required to lift up to forty pounds. Employees will be expected to acquire assistance with lifting or carrying animals or materials over 40 pounds.

Work Requirements

• Radiation exposure (x-ray, CT Scan)


• Possible exposure to gas sterilization using ethylene oxide


• Hazards associated with infected animals, controlled substances, and possible exposure to contagious diseases


• Exposures to unpleasant odors and noises


• Exposure to aggressive patients, bites, scratches and animal wastes

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Veterinary technician experience required. Licensure preferred but not necessary. Proficiencies with IV catheter placement, intubation and monitoring anesthesia required. Basic customer service skills required. Basic computer skills necessary.
