Job Essential Functions | |
1. |
Assist Directors with oversight for multiple hospital departments including inpatient, emergency department and PACU. |
2. |
Serve as a liaison for department directors, managers and staff. |
3. |
Serve as point of contact for staff for any issues that may arise and use critical thinking to work through issues and report to department director/manager when appropriate. |
4. |
Address patient care, staffing, and any other issues that may arise. |
5. |
Assess the acuity of care required; implement staffing plan for shift, based on patient acuity, patient census and available staff. |
6. |
Supervise nurses and staff and take administrative responsibilities to include schedule, payroll, PTO request, low census, lockers and mailbox access to ensure adequate staffing. In cases of call offs, assist by making calls to find additional staffing. |
7. |
Manage occurrences during the shift, ensuring appropriate documentation and communication while being cognizant of those that may require reporting to regulatory agency within mandated time frames. |
8. |
Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems. |
9. |
Determine the issues to be referred to the Administrator on call; provide immediate follow-up, documentation and communication of incidents to appropriate manager and director in a timely manner. |
10. |
Collaborate with patients, family members, and physicians to ensure needs are met and problems are resolved. |
11. |
Manage subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs and follow up on work results including coordination with Human Resources for recruitment/ hiring/ corrective actions up to termination. |
12. |
Ensure that project/department goals are met. |
13. |
Monitor conditions and throughput of emergency department, inpatient and PACU on an ongoing basis in order to set priorities and help problem solve issues that arise. |
14. |
Actively rounds through inpatient, emergency department and PACU areas every hour. |
15. |
Actively participate in at least one nursing committee. |
16. |
Assist with Admissions for all patients. |
17. |
Orient, train, assign and coach staff. |
18. |
Effectively communicate job expectations and help to ensure expectations are being met. |
19. |
Adhere to policy and procedures. |
20. |
Implement approved productivity processes and have an awareness of productivity and how staffing impacts productivity. |
21. |
Identify system improvements and help to develop strategic plan and see plan to success. |
22. |
Support adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements and other governing agency regulations. |
23. |
Maintain a positive, compassionate, gossip free work environment. |
24. |
Implement patient care goals; teach and counsel patients to reinforce their understanding of disease, medications and self-care skills. |
25. |
Safeguard patients and employees by implementing infection-control policies and protocols; medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. |
26. |
Direct bed control in conjunction with Admissions Coordinator by considering the current patient population, surgery schedule, referrals, status of emergency department, staffing, equipment needs, supplies, and physical facilities. |
27. |
Ensure beds are being utilized appropriately and accepting patients to maximize space potential and meet daily census goals. |
28. |
Problem solving admission and discharge issues when the Admissions Coordinator is unavailable. |
29. |
Respond to emergency situations (RRT, Code Blue) and assist as necessary. |
30. |
Monitor admissions, transfers, and discharges during shift. |
31. |
Identify trends in nursing supplies and anticipate needs. Place orders or delegate ordering as necessary. |
32. |
Be a role model for all staff. |
33. |
Be highly energized and self-motivated. |
34. |
Obtain materials/supplies from Materials Processing and/or the Storeroom for patient care when these departments are not open. Oversee bi-annual inventory. |
35. |
Give ongoing, timely feedback, verbal and written, to staff on performance using Just Culture. All written coaching is to be reviewed by Human Resources and the ACNO to be used as part of performance evaluation. |

Assign and monitor staff attendance and staff development including annual compliance, skills per discipline: Lippincott |
37. |
Assist staff to interpret change in a positive manner. |
38. |
Attend regular meetings and in-services and any required continuing education including Nurse Practice Council and leadership/management trainings as determined by the ACNO. |
39. |
Ensure staff have an opportunity to take a full lunch. Offer lunch breaks for staff in inpatient, emergency department and PACU. |
40. |
Oversee crash cart checks and documentation. |
41. |
Determine appropriate course of action in complex situations through good communication with other House Supervisors and knowledge of ongoing emergency preparedness and safety reports |
42. |
Manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize work. |
43. |
Handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others, in a professional manner. |
44. |
Work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail and maintain a positive attitude. |
45. |
Assist with monthly meetings |
46. |
Perform venipuncture and IV therapy as needed. |
47. |
Conduct end of shift counts |
48. |
