Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Business Development, the Associate Director serves as a key member of the BD management team and an integral member of the organization’s BD overall operations. This position plays a key role in all aspects of new business acquisition through the following key functions: (1) working with all divisions and departments in URC headquarters and field personnel, to win new business; (2) managing proposals in collaboration with respective divisions or units within URC headquarters and field offices; (3) work with and support colleagues in other divisions to support streamlining of business development functions and processes.

 

The Associate Director will work very closely with the BD Director to implement URC’s strategic business development plan and successfully strengthen and grow URC’s client and donor relationships, identify, and execute new opportunities and partnerships, manage business capture teams and surveil market and industry condition and trends.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and in close collaboration with the BD Director, staff and other partners, the Associate Director will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

 


  • Directly supervise and mentor members of the BD team

  • Support the Director in leading the identification, planning and implementation of the new business capture process, organizing and coordinating work with the entire BD team and internal stakeholders.

  • Assist with strategic planning and implementation of the organization’s representation and marketing efforts, in various fora and related activities, including meeting with current and potential clients/donors and partners within governmental agencies and private enterprises.

  • Provide management with entire proposal process including development, finalization, and submission — in coordination with staff and partner organizations, including leadership and management of cross-organizational teams and processes for the development and submission of complex, large-scale projects.

  • Provide guidance and oversight with multiple concurrent proposal development and processes including review of technical materials, coordination of cross-organizational team and functions, lead teaming agreement negotiations, identifying potential partners, and help recognizing candidates for key positions for possible recruitment.

  • Gather, track, synthesize, and disseminate intelligence and other information regarding new business opportunities in the public and private sectors related to various relevant donors, foundations, corporations, and other bilateral and multi-lateral donors.

  • Oversee URC’s business opportunities tracking systems and capture activities, including identifying opportunities that will leverage the organization’s core technical areas and rising new expertise across existing and new clients, leading to development of proposals, concept notes, EOIs and responses to RFIs.

  • Advise and lead on bid/no-bid process, teaming strategy, recruitment, writing, and pricing; including documenting go-no go decisions and at the same time incorporating and integrating lessons learned and analyses from debriefings with win/losses.

  • Produce materials and develop tools and other documents needed in order to promote strong external branding, including presence on social media, leveraging the organization’s strengths and capacities to maximize value of these assets to all current and prospective clients and donors.

  • Develop and track key BD metrics to improve overall returns on investment and continuously monitor quality of proposals and BD operations and strategies aimed at efficiency, thereby reducing operating costs and increase winning rates.

  • When necessary, conduct research, organize workshops, and field visits in order to assist in strategic planning, and developing and writing proposals and other relevant materials.

  • Promote accountability, communicate clear expectations, and provide constructive feedback while serving as mentor and guide to direct reports, as well as other members of the BD team and/or URC staff.

  • Demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and ability to maintain positive relationships and composure sustaining a work environment of mutual respect where team members strive to achieve excellence.

  • Sustain and further develop collaboration and coordination with internal and external clients.

  • Perform other related duties and assignments, as assigned, and needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Required Experience & Qualifications 


  • At least seven (7) years of cumulative experience of business development and opportunity capture in international development agencies/industry, NGOs, or other implementing partners with proven successes and wins.

  • At least ten (10) years of direct experience working within the international public health and development sectors related to technical capacity/service delivery and implementation

  • Demonstrable knowledge of and background in public health/development practices, methods and approaches in HIV/AIDS, MNCH, OVC, VMMC, PMTCT, WASH, nutrition and education with M/E/L, QI, SBCC, HSS, Health Financing methods and approaches.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management/Administration, International Relations, Social Sciences, Public Health, or other related disciplines. Master’s or advanced relevant degrees highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of USAID RFP/RFAs, other federal government bidding processes, and/or international donor agencies is a MUST.

  • Proven understanding and success in management of the business development function including creation of multi-year strategic plans, health pipelines, revenue projections, and realization of projected revenue growth.

  • Experience coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, work well under pressure and meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced team-based environment and adapt to shifting priorities

  • Proven ability to lead, develop and work well with teams and/or independently and flexibility to changing work environments and conditions.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written English) including ability to provide briefing and present/facilitate to diverse audience with varying backgrounds and learning styles.

  • Must be able to operate independently where appropriate but understand when issues need to be escalated to other relevant members of the organization.

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to work on basic processes as well as strategic initiatives.

  • In-depth proficiency with editing and formatting documents, including advanced-level experience in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe products.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to developing countries up to 50% throughout the year is required

 

Desired Experience & Qualifications 


  • Experience developing and implementing training

  • Background and knowledge with USAID and other USG rules and procedures related to implementation of projects under contracts and cooperative agreements

  • Cultural competency and experience living and/or working within developing nations

  • Fluency in other languages and major dialects, particularly French, Spanish, and/or Arabic is a major advantage.

 

Physical Demands


  • This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

  • This position would require opening filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool and may require the ability to lift files/folders/boxes, as necessary

  • This position may require frequent travel to domestic and international locations with varying distances, duration, and modes of transport

  • Deadlines or periods of heavy workload, may require coming in or starting work early, or otherwise perform tasks outside the normal working hours, including early mornings, late evenings and/or weekends, to ensure continued support and deliverables are met
