Staff Application Engineer

What do you get to do in this position?


  • Responsible for performing application engineering design processes and managing application engineering activities for power distribution products at the El Paso production plants.
  • Responsible for performing technical analysis of customer requirements to develop custom design solutions with Schneider Electric products.
  • Design custom power distribution equipment, create bills of materials, develop drawing packages, seek alternative part replacements, advise customers of possible solutions, assist in product tests, and help production and other production support functions with application engineering related activities.
  • Develop drawing packages to include electrical schematics, electrical 1-line power flow drawings, and mechanical layout drawings. Utilize CAD, drawing management, and enterprise resource planning software tools to execute design and scheduling activities.
  • Develop power control schemes through programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), human machine interfaces (HMI), and power control relays to accomplish automated transfer operations and design of ground fault protective schemes.
  • Guide and train application engineers on the use of best practices, product knowledge, and advanced power distribution techniques.
  • Serve as a liaison between application engineering, quality, and other design teams to improve product quality and product features.

This job might be for you if:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and 3 years of work experience in switchboard and switchgear use, regulations, and design.

Must have 3 years of professional work experience with:

(1) Developing technical solutions for customer orders in the power distribution and control industry;

(2) Designing low voltage equipment for PZ4 Switchgear, QED-6 Switchboards for up to 6,000 amps;

(3) Protective custom MDGF (modified differential Ground Fault Protection) schemes, radial and single grounding point schemes, and delta and wye HRGU systems;

(4) Modbus Serial, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, Profibus, ProfiNet, and Device Net communication systems;

(5) Arc flash protection coordination and zone selective interlocking and energy reduction for maintenance applications;

(6) Executing technical, design, and customer service processes within time and budget scope of project for power distribution equipment;

(7) Identifying and providing pricing and duration for proposed solutions, designs, and product configurations;

(8) Designing power distribution for multi-source applications to include electrical interlocks for open and closed transition schemes, keylock protective schemes, and relay based transfer schemes;

(9) Understanding ANSI relay controls and relay control software applications to include AcSELerator programming for SEL Relays, Enervista programming for Multilin Relays, and SFT2841 programming for SEPAM Relays;

(10) Electrical and mechanical standards needed for designing switchboard and switchgear equipment including NEC, UL, and ANSI standards pertaining to Switchboard and Switchgear equipment.

(11) Using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;

(12) Working in a high complexity manufacturing environment to include interacting with and managing corporate customer accounts, sales projects, marketing initiatives, and guiding manufacturing associates;

(13) Troubleshooting electrical circuits;

(14) Interpreting customer specifications, power flow drawings, control schematics, and electrical room layouts; and

(15) Working with field sales, consulting engineers, and customers.
