 TB/HAI EPIDEMIOLOGIST

The Ohio Department of Health seeks an experienced epidemiologist to join our Tuberculosis and Healthcare-Associated Infections (TB/HAI) team.  In addition to investigating, analyzing, providing surveillance, and conducting epidemiological studies for cases of TB, you’d play an essential ad hoc role supporting our COVID-19 response, including daily case reviews, outbreak response and coordination with the CDC Division of Global Migration and Quarantine.  This role shares focus – just at a more junior/mid-level – with our concurrent posting for an Epidemiology Investigator 3 (PN20013658) within the same group.

 

 

JOB DUTIES



  • As a member of the Tuberculosis and Healthcare-Associated Infections (TB/HAI) Program, investigates endemic or epidemic situations of tuberculosis infection through in-house or onsite visits, data collection, epidemiologic studies and appropriate statistical analysis and methods using computer software packages: collects data, or monitors others in the collection of data, for routine disease surveillance or for epidemiologic investigations of TB infection; collects data from internal and external data sources (e.g., laboratories, hospitals) to incorporate into the TB surveillance database (ODRS) and evaluates data to ensure data completeness and consistency with the CDC case definition; analyzes surveillance or study data using statistical software (e.g., SAS), interprets statistical findings and reaches conclusions regarding unusual occurrences, causes, spread, and prevention of TB infection; monitors the process of specimen collection, delivery to a laboratory, and reporting of results for special study projects. Assists with investigations of other outbreaks, especially healthcare-associated infections.




  • Operates a personal computer on a network to access data, conduct statistical analysis, and produce reports; prepares data for analysis and conducts analysis (e.g., epidemiologic, biostatistical, and geographic); creates data reports using statistical and reporting software; conducts and coordinates electronic data transmissions including electronic lab reporting, between data files, databases, and data users; assists in the development of database projects (e.g., assists in planning and testing of new database functionality, HL7 development, and electronic lab reporting); creates reports within computer software to be run by others; produces data analyses in response to data requests from public health professionals, health care providers and the general public; plans and produces standardized data reports on a scheduled basis and assures appropriate distribution, including posting on the ODH web page.




  • Writes and/or edits reports and recommendations from analysis of data; Prepares graphic presentations of data for inclusion in reports or for display; works collaboratively with local public health agencies and private health care providers to improve TB reporting activities.




  • Tabulates and analyzes epidemiologic data using statistical software (e.g., SAS) to apply standard statistical methods appropriate to specific data; assists TB/HAI Epidemiology Investigator 3 or Supervisor in coordinating data collection and providing quality control for data management aspects of TB surveillance databases (e.g., ODRS, Access, Excel).




  • Explains surveillance procedures, epidemiologic methods and analysis findings to health care providers, public health professionals and the general public; provides consultation to public health professionals and health care providers in planning and carrying out surveillance and epidemiologic studies, and in the use of epidemiologic software; prepares and makes presentations to health professionals and the general public; distributes data to other programs within ODH, to other agencies, and to the general public, represents TB/HAI Program at meeting, trainings, or conferences as assigned; assists in the surveillance of other infectious disease as directed by supervisors; assists supervisor in the preparation of protocols for epidemiologic investigations, especially TB and HAIs. As assigned, serves as a member of a Disaster Recovery/Business Resumption team, Incident Response Team, or similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations.



 


UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: 


  • May require travel; may be away from home & normal work site up to 30 days during emergencies; may be exposed to contagious & communicable diseases & toxic or hazardous chemicals.


MINIMUM CLASS QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:



  • Completion of graduate core program in public health or preventive medicine, AND




  • 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in use of statistical computer software packages, AND




  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in epidemiology, AND 




  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in physiology, AND




  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in statistics, AND




  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in human relations, AND




  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing, AND




  • 6 mos. exp. working in research or specific laboratory identifying or researching infectious or chronic diseases &/or related environmental health problems, AND




  • Must be able to provide own transportation



OR



  • 6 mos. exp. as Epidemiology Investigator 1, 65761, AND




  • Must be able to provide own transportation



OR



  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above



 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:  

 



  • Graduate or advanced degree in public health or preventive medicine 




  • Two or more courses in epidemiology or biostatistics




  • Experience with surveillance of tuberculosis or other infectious diseases 




  • Experience using statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R)




  • Experience interacting with local health jurisdictions, health care providers & the public




  • Experience conducting training and providing technical assistance




  • Experience interpreting and conducting a statistical analysis of health-related data




  • One or more courses in statistics
