The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The Strategy & Business Development Manager position, located in 3M Center, Maplewood, MN, reporting to the Vice President of the division, will take the lead in the Construction & Home Improvement Markets Division strategic planning process, help implement global initiatives and projects driven from the strategic plan and lead all inorganic growth activities.  These inorganic activities will include M&A research and exploration, external joint venture partnerships, equity investment opportunities and intellectual property acquisition.  The position will interact with internal and external contacts on joint ventures, company partnerships, and business development opportunities within the division portfolio spaces and adjacencies.  This position reports directly to the division VP and is a member of the division operating committee.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Responsible for the division strategic planning process by working with the leadership team to set medium- to long-term strategic direction and operating plans for the division.


• Facilitate strategic workshops, competitive analysis, war gaming


• Work with Global Business Unit, Technical and Manufacturing Directors to align business objectives to long-term regional and global strategies.


• In alignment with Division M&A strategy, identify global candidate companies for investigation.  Provide ongoing counsel to the Division VP regarding M&A


• Lead division efforts in acquisition valuation analysis, due diligence, preparation of strategic decks for EVP or PAR reviews


• Manage division process for Quarterly Operations Reviews and Division Operating Committee meetings.

Your Skills and Expertise 
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution


• Seven (7) combined years experience in strategic planning, business development, sales, marketing, and/or general business management in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• MBA or Master’s degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in business strategy or marketing


• Knowledge & experience in working in Consumer markets or products.


• Knowledge and experience with the theories and practices of one (1) or more disciplines such as:  market research, new product development, M&A, financial concepts


• Strategy / planning experience demonstrating the ability to synthesize industry, customer, and product information into a comprehensive, cohesive story


• Key characteristics include strategic thinker, creative and action-oriented


• Passionate team player that energizes and leads others 


• Strong business, finance and analytics acumen


• M&A Experience, experience producing market analysis, company profiles, valuation and recommendation materials


• Experience in strategic and operational planning, financial theory and concepts

Travel: May include up to 30% domestic/international

Location: Maplewood, MN and may consider remote U.S. work location
