The Safety & Software Assurance Manager position located in Overland Park, Kansas is part of Technical Department, and consists globally in monitoring all activities to demonstrate that the safety objectives have been met, throughout the entire life cycle of the solution.
Assurance and Engineering responsibilities are separated with regards to Safety with independent reporting lines.
The Safety & Software Assurance Manager has the overall responsibility to independently verify and validate Safety and Software assurance engineering activities in projects, products and bids and ultimately to ensure that NAS delivered systems as a whole are within their acceptable level of safety. For this, the Safety & Software Assurance Manager interfaces operationally with the relevant Project/Products Design Authorities and Project/Products Safety and Software Managers.
In terms of reporting the position:
Locally reports to the AMS US Engineering Manager
Is line managed and reports to the Technical Director of NAS
Has a dotted reporting line to the NAS Safety Authority
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain the AMS BL safety referential (Safety Management System & instructions) and SW assurance referential
Provide expert guidance on methodologies and standards to be applied
Propose improvements to the AMS BL Safety Management System
Is responsible for defining applicable safety and SW assurance instructions compliant with the AMS SMS and for their integration in the overall engineering referential.
Contribute R&T activities
Contribute to AMS BL regulatory and standardisation activities
Contribute to the definition of the safety and SW assurance strategic activities
Maintain safety and Software assurance culture
Define required skills & expertise
Maintain skills & expertise via regular communications in collaboration with the ERC
Disseminate the referential across projects/products and Bids in his scope of responsibility
Is responsible for verifying the implementation of the AMS safety referential and AMS SW assurance referential in their scope of responsibility
Bids
Support the safety and SW assurance strategy with the bid safety manager
Verify the safety (resp. SW assurance) estimates to ensure implementation of the safety (resp. SW assurance) cost model and the bid safety (resp. SW assurance) strategy
Verify that the SW assurance Approval baseline and process are defined, SW assurance Means of compliance are defined and aligned with BL strategy, SW assurance risks are identified and action plan are defined and acceptable
Products and Projects
Verify the safety management plan, to ensure its compliance with the AMS safety referential and the bid strategy
Verify the safety case report to ensure Safety risks are properly identified, assessed and managed and that the residual safety risks are known, tolerable and accepted:
Ensures that the safety requirements are properly derived and implemented in the product/system (specification and architecture)
Ensures that the product/system achieves its safety objectives
Raises risk areas such as unachieved safety objectives, completeness and correctness of the safety analyses and propose adequate mitigations.
Verify the Plan for SW aspect of Approval (PSAA), to ensure its compliance with the SW assurance referential and the bid strategy
Monitor the SW assurance liaison process and SW assurance Accomplishment Summary to ensure that SW assurance risks are managed
SW assurance Baseline (SW Product Breakdown Structure, Assurance level allocation is complete, stable and mature
SW assurance means of compliance are properly developed in compliance with the PSAA
Advising the Safety Authority, SW assurance Authority and Technical Director on any Safety or SW assurance concerns.
Soliciting and coordinating with Quality, audits of Project Safety activities to ensure compliance with the Safety Engineering Process.
Supporting the Operational Authority in managing the correct response to Incidents and Accidents.
Maintaining a detailed knowledge of the company’s legal responsibilities and liabilities with respect to solution safety, as well as the Operating Entities’ Policy and Instructions for Safety Assurance and Safety Engineering.
Communicate regularly and socialise the Safety and SW assurance discipline to Thales employees.

Key Communications:
Communicate the Safety Case results to customer when required, and to the Project Design Authority with the support of the Safety Manager
Communicate regularly the Safety Cases status to the Safety Authority and Technical Director
Communicate regularly the SW assurance Accomplishment Summary status to the SW assurance Authority and Technical Director
More generally:
Internal –Technical Director, Safety Authority, SW assurance Authority, Project Design Authorities, Operational Authorities, Project Safety Managers and Capture Team Leaders.
External – Regulatory and certification organizations, Customers, Subcontractors and other Thales Companies.

Required Skills and Experience:
Degree in computer sciences (minimum Bachelor of Sciences or equivalent) or Air Traffic Management sciences
Solid knowledge in the ATM Domain and a good understanding of the underlying implementation technologies.
Prior experience evaluating Safety Regulation requirements and Safety Projects requirements and to assess the adequacy of the proposed Safety Solution.
5 years’ experience managing Safety programs in the Air Traffic Management environment or technical equivalent
Mastering of Safety Regulation and Safety standards:
System safety standard: Euro control safety assessment, MIL-STD-882
Software Assurance standards including DO-278A/ED 109A, and/ or supplement, ED-153 or similar (DO-178B, DO-178C)
Working knowledge of system safety tools and techniques including Fault Tree Analyses, Event Tree Analysis, Goal Structured Notation, HAZOP.
Proven capability to work in a multi-cultural environment and with variety of international customers.
Strong English communication skills and the ability to present technical information (verbally or written) to colleagues
Must be a US person as defined by applicable law.
The position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation IITAR) (And) the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible, or able to obtain authorization, for such access.
Occasional European and US travel will be required.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Master of Science or Engineering Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Airport Management or comparable
Working knowledge of engineering, software and hardware processes
Experience in preparing for and presenting in Safety and Software audits (e.g. with the FAA)
Ability to speak additional languages such as German, Italian or French is a benefit
Knowledge of Software / Hardware assurance standards DO-254
Experience with Thales tools and processes preferred.
Experience with DOD, EASA and/or FAA Programs is preferred
