The US Tax Team is based in Newton, Massachusetts and supports the four business divisions of RELX in the United States. Its primary responsibility is to provide deep technical expertise on all aspects of tax management. In addition, it ensures that the 60+ companies doing business in the US are in compliance with federal and state and local tax authorities and are maximizing their tax positions. The US Tax Team is part of the global corporate tax team led by the Head of Group Tax, who is based in London.
The US Tax Team is a highly visible group, and highly business focused. It interacts in detail with different stakeholders, including external customers, state government officials, internal operations, legal, finance, and other groups in the organization. As such, the Senior Tax Accountant position is a cross-functional role and requires an individual with experience in the areas of federal and multistate taxes, as well as strong financial and business expertise, and business partnering skills.

The Senior Tax Accountant will work closely with the Income Tax compliance team to ensure that federal, state and local exam issues are addressed.
Job Purpose:
The US Tax Department is a strategic, integrated global organization with primary responsibility for the US. The Senior Tax Accountant will be a key member of the Tax Department, and the successful candidate will bring experience in the areas of current and emerging US tax law, specifically IRS and state regulations as they pertain to corporate tax; project management, financial modeling, problem solving and analytical thinking. This is a support role and the successful candidate will become highly visible within the organization interacting with business units' sales, finance, operations, HR, legal and insurance personnel.
The Senior Tax Accountant must develop collaborative relationships across RELX business units to accumulate the information necessary to respond to state and federal information document requests and items relevant to positions taken on federal and state tax returns. The Senior Tax Accountant must be able to coordinate and manage several projects at the same time.
The successful candidate will report to the Director - Tax Risk and Controversy and will accumulate and manage data required for federal, state and local income tax audits, tax planning projects, US research and development credit, intercompany transactions and ad hoc transfer pricing projects.
The key objectives are:
Draft concise responses to federal, state and local information document requests. Interact with external auditors, international, federal and state authorities. Manage multiple complex vendor relationships and assist in negotiating desired outcome. Research, review and draft memoranda regarding current and emerging US tax law, specifically federal and state regulations as they pertain to corporate tax. Request and gather information for IRS exam and other federal, state and international tax matters. Develop and maintain procedures for accumulating necessary documentation and adherence to federal and state regulations, exam determinations and for integrating corporate acquisitions within the RELX tax function. Responsible for cohesive and effective coordination between tax department and business units. Work closely with business units to develop understanding of business strategy, priorities and objectives. Identify and evaluate planning, business improvements and opportunities. Liaise with external consultants on various tax planning projects. Involvement in financial reporting, specifically with respect to UTPs. Identify and accumulate information relative to BEAT transactions for federal return. Assist with ad-hoc transfer pricing projects as they arise. Assist the tax department in all tax functions as needed. Alert management of situations that may adversely affect the company's financial condition. Become knowledgeable of internal IT and control systems and other systems relevant to the position.

Person Specification:
Qualification/Knowledge
CPA, JD or corporate tax experience
Masters in Taxation or enrolled towards degree preferred
Skills/Experience
3 - 5 years corporate tax experience in public accounting, government agency, law firm or industry
Strong organization and communication skills - written and oral
Strong analytical skills
Excellent leadership skills
Experience with OneSource tax software
Strong Excel skills and financial acumen, experience or exposure to Alteryx a plus
Strong knowledge of federal and multistate law
