Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a summer intern to be part of a unique marine oil spill and marine renewable energy research, testing, and training facility at Ohmsett - The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility located in Leonardo, New Jersey. ARA’s Ohmsett Team is committed to:


  • Providing excellent service to the global oil spill response community and the marine renewable energy industry

  • Operating and maintaining a US government state-of-the-art facility

  • Developing Ohmsett into an International Center of Excellence for Oil Spill Response and Marine Renewable Energy

We are looking for a well-qualified candidate who has interest and experience with experimental research and testing. You will work with other members of the Ohmsett team as the site goes through a periodic maintenance turnaround.  In particular, the 203-meter wave tank will be drained, and critical maintenance will be performed during the summer of 2021.  You will be presented with an opportunity to see and assist with this important and challenging process.  You will also have the opportunity to participate in any ongoing research projects that may take place concurrent with the tank project.

A knowledge or aptitude related to chemistry, mechanical, civil, or ocean engineering, and/or field testing is needed for this position. Successful applicants need good communication and interpersonal skills and should have the demonstrated ability to solve problems.

Position Requirements:


  • Coursework or experience in one or more of the following research / engineering areas: Ocean Engineering, Marine Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry

  • Experience working in a research environment that requires ingenuity and creative problem solving

  • An ability to work effectively independently or in a team environment

  • Applicants will be subject to a government security investigation to gain access to Naval Weapons Station Erle, the site where Ohmsett is located

Education

Required 

Student pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Science or Engineering.      

Citizenship


  • U.S. Citizen and ability to obtain and maintain a Government-issued Common Access Card (CAC)
