Primary Purpose: Using established policies and procedures; the Non-Certified Coder transforms narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries, and healthcare procedures into numeric or alphanumeric designations (code). The Non-Certified Coder generally codes all types of inpatient, observation and outpatient cases (to include clinics, ancillary services, and ambulatory surgery, series, and emergency room cases).
Knowledge and Skills
Education: High School Diploma or GED. Formal education in basic ICD-9CM/CPT (ICD-10) coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy/, pathophysiology and disease processes - minimum required. Associate or Bachelor degree preferred in health care related field.
Years of Experience: 1-2 years equivalent experience. At least 1 year of acute care coding.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Computer skills (both keyboarding and applications). Trained and competent in ICD-9 CM/CPT and ICD-10 CM/CPT Coding. Technically competent to code all outpatient records. Technically competent to code all inpatient cases.
Technically competent to code outpatient cases with simple diagnoses or procedures (sutures, Foley catheters, clinic procedures, transfusions, etc).
