We are currently looking for a Technical Writer to join Thales in Syracuse, NY.  The Technical Writer will support the Digital Aviation Solution (DAS) (Thales USA) in addressing the integration challenge of unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system.  Due to this challenge, the team has identified an urgent need to grow its team capabilities by adding an experienced Technical Writer with a background in manual and proposal development to its technical staff in the Syracuse, NY, office.   As part of the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) team, this position with help to change aviation by supporting specific product development and project execution activities. 

Thales provides mission critical services to airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers around the world.  Thales has created a new software as a service (SaaS) model aimed at improving aeronautical operations by leveraging cloud-based technologies (machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.).  The provision of capabilities for enabling safe and efficient operation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) – also called UAS Traffic Management (UTM) – is a growing market need and one application targeted by this new product.  Thales is seeking outstanding engineering professionals to assist with the development and deployment of this breakthrough capability.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for conducting editing of professional documents for content, format, flow and integrity in conformance with best practices


  • Responsible for identifying additional or missing materials required to deliver documentation


  • Responsible for editing written copy, researching and writing professional documents, including program reports and procedures, technical documentation and training materials


Required Skills and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with minimum 5-8+ years of experience or Master’s degree in a related field with 4+ years of experience


  • Prior experience in development of technical data materials for FAA and/or DoD


  • Must meet US ITAR and export control eligibility requirements


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with Internet / commercial software as a service (SaaS) offerings strongly preferred


  • Prior experience with development of customer service documentation/process is preferred


This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) (AND) the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).  All applicants must be eligible, or able to obtain authorization, for such access.
