Summary:

The Mechanic must be able to work with minimal supervision and be able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components.The Mechanic applies a high degree of skill and knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles in determining production equipment malfunctions and restoring equipment to normal operation. The Mechanic will be required to train and assist mechanics at lower skill levels using standard operating procedures. The Mechanic must be capable of readily identifying and assessing if problems are mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic in nature. The Mechanic will be expected to identify basic control system malfunctions (i.e. - identify PLC I/O problems) and electrical problems such as switches, relays, solenoid valves, etc. using diagnostic test equipment and diagrams. The Mechanic will be able to perform basic troubleshooting on most automated equipment systems and will be expected to train lower level mechanics. The Mechanic will be expected to perform setup/changeover of production equipment and make necessary adjustments to equipment to ensure the machine is producing an acceptable product if required. The Mechanic will be required to work in all production areas, as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Systematically identifies, locates, and corrects problems using well-defined troubleshooting methodology and practices. Must understand the impact of, and the relationship between, mechanical adjustments to valves, switches, and timers, with respect to the effect each adjustment will have on the equipment and the manufactured product.
  • With minimal supervision, repairs and installs pneumatic, hydraulic and/or electrical systems and components on most production equipment.
  • Able to fabricate simple machine parts constructed of steel, stainless steel or plastics using basic ship equipment. Must be able to soft solder and silver solder. Ability to stick, TIG and advance to Mechanic IV.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical problems on production equipment using test equipment such as volt-ohm and amp meters, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and charts.
  • Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on all production equipment.
  • Must have a functional knowledge of basic shop equipment and power tools such as drill press, grinders, band saws, and belt sanders.
  • With guided supervision, be able to troubleshoot basic malfunctions with PLC, variable frequency drives, and other logic-controlling systems. Must be fully proficient and understand PLC's, troubleshoot and correct problems relative to automated equipment and production equipment control systems to advance to Mechanic IV.
  • Performs machine set-up and changeovers using Standard Operating Procedures and in line with current OSHA requirements.
  • Associate will be innovative, knowledgeable and intensely committed to ensuring that every product and service we supply confirms to FDA and Quality System Regulations as well as ISO standards.
  • Maintain company-required performance and maintenance records for identified equipment.
  • Focus on minimizing unplanned downtime in pursuit of Lean Manufacturing objectives. Including but not limited to set-up/changeover reduction, SMED, TPM, OEE, Poke-a-Yoke, etc.
  • Embraces 5S program as part of Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:


  • High school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma (GED) required; associates or technical degree preferred.
  • Five to eight (5-8) years directly related experience required; completion of industrial maintenance apprenticeship or vocational electrical program preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, basic schematics, basic blueprints, and basic diagrams.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively to outside vendors and/or co-workers, supervisors, etc.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, metric measurement, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret charts and graphs.
  • Associate must provide their own hand tools for performing machine repairs. Tools should include industrial mechanic tools such as sockets, wrenches, pliers, punches, chisels, screwdrivers, dial caliper and micrometer, etc.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in production environment situations.
  • Ability to train other less skilled maintenance employees on procedures and sound mechanical troubleshooting methods.
