We are looking for highly motivated applicantswith nationally recognized expertise inleading research and development (R&D)efforts across a broad range of reactor engineering methods and software development. We have an opening for a senior-levelresearcher in the Power Reactor Modeling (PRM) Group within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy Directorate.The RMP Group develops and applies state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities for lattice physics, reactor core, spent fuel, and fuel cycle applicationsthrough leadership in thedevelopment ofSCALE and Virtual Environmentfor Reactor Applications (VERA) and in collaboration with industry, national laboratories, and university researchers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Application-driven methods development for radiation transport, neutronics, and coupledmultiphysicsfor light-water and advanced reactor applications

  • Design, optimization, and performance analysis of light-water and advanced reactor performance using VERA and SCALE

  • Collaboration with nuclear industry professionals on the effective use of VERA or SCALE for commercial applications

  • Confirmatory analysis assessments to enable the efficient regulatory review of reactor/fuel concepts and operational changes at nuclear power plants for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

  • Fuel cycle analysis to evaluate the financial and safety impact of various reactor/fuel concepts or optimization provided using advanced reactor modeling software

  • Performingindividual and collaborativeR&Dforhighlycomplex and diverseproblemsand communicating thetechnical aspects of thework performedthrough publications and presentations

  • Effectivelyinteractingwith technical peers, program managers, and sponsors, both domestically and internationally, to meet the requirements of projects within scope, schedule, and budget

  • Leadingsignificantresearch projectswithbroadlatitudetodefineobjectives and approaches to ensuretechnical and programmatic success

  • Developingsignificant newproposals andacquiring research fundingthroughwork with project sponsorsandcross-institutional collaborators

Basic Qualification:


  • This position requires a PhD in nuclear engineering, computer science, or a relevant field with 8 years of post-graduate experience

  • Knowledge of computationalnuclear R&Das demonstrated through education and associated publications is required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required, including verbal, presentation, and writing skills

  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • PhD in nuclear engineering or computational science with a dissertation related to reactor analysis

  • Experience developingcollaborativesoftwarewith acomputational nuclear analysiscodesuite

  • Familiarity with a wide range of reactor systems and concepts

  • Familiarity with modern software development practices such as unit testing and revision control, and the ability to work with C++, FORTRAN, and scripting languages

  • Capability to understand and interpret reactor and nuclear system operational and fuel cycle performance

  • Familiarity with Monte Carlo algorithms including use and deployment on advanced HPC architectures

  • Working knowledge of neutronics and one or more complementary technical areas such as thermal-hydraulics, isotopic transmutation, nuclear data/physics, clad-coolantor saltchemistry, or thermo-mechanical fuel performance.
