Scientist II - Formulation Chemist
Location: Aurora, IL
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Scientist II has the primary responsibility for conducting research tasks coordinated by more experienced scientists and managers. In general, a Scientist II conducts laboratory bench work tasks, physical testing and supports QA and Operations in trouble shooting manufacturing issues. This position is responsible for product development, cost saving initiatives, and production support.This person will be dealing primarily with water based and solvent based adhesives, sealants, and coatings for utilities and infrastructure. This includes thermal insulation, HVAC, water proofing, and general construction.
PRIMARY DUTIES
This individual is involved in a variety of research, development and technical service activities, including:
Developing solvent based and water-based coatings, adhesives and sealants for the utilities and infrastructure division
Conducting and analyzing experiments on organic and inorganic substances to determine and evaluate their chemical and physical properties and to investigate their applications to industry
Carrying out experiments to improve upon or to duplicate materials, substances and engaging in research to identify new methods of processing or production
Applying and interpreting standard scientific theories, concepts, and techniques
Completing basic projects independently, drawing conclusions with guidance, and reproducing and articulating results and their meaning, including business impact
Supporting product or process demonstrations
Identifying and developing solutions to problems where causal relationships can be identified, and some precedence may exist
Documenting test results and making process improvement recommendations.
Documenting project updates and executing projects using project management methodologies
Fulfilling responsibilities as required by the Quality System for the site/business unit.
Working in a safe and efficient manner
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and
2+ years' of professional industry experience
1-2 years' of professional industry experience with Master's Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
Preferred Qualifications
Strong background in compounding water based and solvent based coatings, adhesives, and sealants. An emphasis on solvent based butyl rubber / block copolymer technology is preferred
Knowledge of fire resistive technology
Knowledge of application methods for coatings and adhesives including conventional and airless spray equipment, brush, and trowel
Knowledge of the manufacturing equipment and requirements to produce water-based technologies and combustible and flammable solvent based products
Familiarity with ASTM Test methods for construction sealants
Knowledge of general construction concepts
PC skills - Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams)
Familiarity with Stage Gate and/or Lean Six Sigma
Ability to utilize basic project management concepts
Some supervisory experience prioritizing and assigning work
Ability to solve technical problems and recommend solutions
Ability to interpret data and develop reports

Physical Environment
Most duties are performed in a laboratory environment or a manufacturing plant environment. However, it may be necessary to perform product testing/applications outdoors or in a controlled environment such as high temperature/humidity
Occasional lifting of 25-50-pound bags or pails
Personal Protective Equipment is required during routine laboratory work and safety glasses should be always worn in the lab. Safety shoes are required in the plant
Handling of various raw materials and laboratory chemicals will be necessary.
Product applications may require some physical effort such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or bending
Operation of physical and chemical testing equipment will be necessary.
Travel up to 10% may be necessary
Certain skills and physical dexterity are required during proper evaluation of lab and production batches, including the use of application tools such as spray equipment, trowels, brushes, and rollers
