Core Responsibilities:



  • Provide technical guidance and professional counsel to the Division Management Team (DMT) on all HSE matters impacting the business, including occupational safety and health, environmental compliance and sustainability, and product regulations (e.g., REACH, RoHS).

  • Manage all health, safety and environmental programs for the division to assure compliance with BGI HSE Standards and all applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations. At least 50% of time is spent on the shop floor working directly with employees, supervisors and engineers coordinating HSE activities, identifying and mitigating risks, and driving new HSE initiatives.

  • Conduct risk assessments (including aspects/impacts analyses) and job safety analyses; identify and evaluate hazards and recommend and implement corrective measures; communicate results and the importance of control measures to employees. Manage the BGI Critical Risk Mitigation Program (CRMP), including development of alternate control measures (ACM), ensuring control reliability, and establishing key control.

  • Develop strategic plans and budgets to achieve HSE compliance in line with business requirements and conditions.

  • Champion behavior-based safety observation and near miss reporting programs, and build and foster relationships that support a strong safety culture. Guide and support operations leaders on employee engagement in HSE; provide HSE coaching at all levels.

  • Actively participate on site Safety Committee and in Division activities including self-inspections, Gemba walks, Kaizen/3P events; collaborate with engineering and production support teams to improve fabrication, tooling, and manufacturing practices to eliminate or reduce HSE risks.

  • Partner with Operations management in setting goals and plans for the reduction of risk, prevention of injuries and incidents, to ensure regulatory compliance/continuously improve the HSE management system.

  • Conduct machine guarding assessments and develop safe set up procedures; manage the mechanical power press program consistent with the OSHA standard.

  • Assist managers in investigating all workplace HSE incidents to determine root cause and assist in identifying and implementing corrective actions that address systemic deficiencies and will prevent recurrence.

  • Review, revise and validate machine-specific energy-control procedures; provide guidance and coaching on proper lockout/tagout and alternate control measures; audit the LOTO program and authorized employees to ensure program effectiveness.

  • Manage the Industrial Hygiene program, including combustible dust compliance, hearing conservation, and customized hazard communication for chemical lines, labs and clean rooms. Conduct qualitative and quantitative assessments and manage/maintain the MSDS online eBinder.

  • Manage internal and external reporting and regulatory compliance; collect, analyze and report data such as air emissions, hazard waste, water and energy usage and incident reports. Prepare and submit required agency reports and plans (e.g., OSHA Logs, SARA Tier II, Form R, SWPPP, SPCC, DMRs, PIQ, etc.). Schedule and conduct sampling as required. Work with operations and government agencies as needed to implement sustainable control measures to prevent regulatory non-compliance.

  • Manage elements of the Worker's Compensation program, including initial investigation and reporting, claims management and safe return to work (RTW) in accordance with State regulations and the Barnes RTW program. Implement proactive health & wellness programs to reduce workplace injuries and worker's compensation costs.

  • Develop and conduct employee HSE training in a way that engages employees in our Safety First culture.


Qualifications:



  • 4-8 years of HSE experience in a manufacturing environment. Experience with metal stamping and mechanical power presses is desired.

  • Knowledge of HSE management systems, process improvement and ISO 14001 is desired.

  • Demonstrates sound business judgment. Able to process different perspectives and competing priorities to achieve a balanced approach.

  • Develops effective working relationships which foster integrity, trust and respect.

  • Effectively communicates and shares information, knowledge and expertise with all levels of the organization.

  • Strong influencing and people engagement skills; ability to coach/mentor line organization to drive zero risk mentality.

  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, and experience with HSE applications and tools.


Education Requirements:


  • B.S. degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering or closely related discipline required.
