PL Product DevelopmentSpecialist 2 Job Summary

Location: Westfield Center, OH Home Office or remote work within our operating territory.

Salary Range: 60,589 - 78,766

The Personal Lines (PL) Product Development Specialist utilizes personal lines insurance knowledge in assisting PL Product Managers with technical aspects of drafting policy language and manual rules/guidelines, and compiling rate pages for filings. Working independently, produces geopolitical update validation and territory mapping for IT including territory conversion information. Develops competitor premium comparisons utilizing comparative rating software. Provides observations and recommendations from management reports to influence and drive action within the business.

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)


  1. Utilizes personal lines insurance knowledge in assisting with technical aspects of drafting policy language and manual rules/guidelines, and compiling rate pages for filings.

  2. Working independently, produces geopolitical update validation and territory mapping for IT, including territory conversion information.

  3. Investigates and resolves customer claim corrections (CLUE) in coordination with the vendor.

  4. Reviews Firesafe disputes and communicates with the vendor for validation of disputed data. Communicates the outcome back to the business unit and notifies the PL Product Managers of any inconsistencies that may have arisen within the dispute process.

  5. Develops competitor premium comparisons utilizing comparative rating software. Uses analysis to influence and drive action with business partners by using fact based, forward looking perspectives/observations/recommendations.

  6. Collaborates with PL Underwriting in territory dispute process to ensure geo-coding process in properly assigning territories.

  7. Utilizes critical thinking skills to develop observations/recommendations for existing management reports such as ID Theft, group discount, and auto/home policy listing files.

  8. Responsible for mapping software updates and ad hoc reporting, such as heat maps and census data maps.

  9. Supports the Product Development and Operations Leader by providing information needed to develop product proposals for rate review meetings. Also tracks and monitors changes at the state level to ensure consistency within rate proposals from state to state.

  10. Maintains automated database for coverage and rule questions from PL Underwriting; responds to those questions in a timely manner, and archives responses for query by others in PL Underwriting.

  11. Travels occasionally in order to participate in special assignments, training, and/or travel between office locations.

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)


  1. 5 or more years' experience in insurance (e.g., underwriting, claims).

  2. Experience solving business problems of basic to moderate complexity. Some examples might include, but are not limited to the following:

    1. Identifying gaps in policy language

    2. Recommending new policy language

    3. Reviewing other carrier information to try and find a competitive advantage

    4. Monitoring product questions from customers to identify trends and opportunities for training and/or communication



  3. Experience using MS Excel and Word for moderately complex formulas and tasks (e.g. running queries, creating pivot tables, spreadsheets, charts, graphs).

  4. Experience working accurately with details.

  5. Experience learning and using mapping software.

  6. Experience with policy contract language and insurance regulations including a working knowledge of insurance metrics.

  7. Experience working both independently and as a member of a team.

  8. Ability to work collaboratively with other business units.

  9. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills resulting in the ability to interact with employees and all levels of management.

  10. Strong time management and organization skills gained through previous work experiences.

  11. Ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time and meet accompanying deadlines.

  12. Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience.

  13. Valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

  • Ability to travel as required.

  • Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy.
