Head Start/Early Head Start Program

Title: Teacher Assistant

Supervisor: Teacher

I. General Description

It is the responsibility of the Teacher Assistant to assist in the day to day organization and operation of programs for a specific group of children providing a high quality environment in which each child achieves the highest level of social, emotional, physical and intellectual competence.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Curriculum

1. Use space, materials, and routines to construct an interesting, secure and enjoyable

environment that encourages play, exploration, and learning.

2. Implement an integrated program of experiences and opportunities which are appropriate

to the developmental levels of the children being served and which contribute to the

growth and development of each child.

B. Teacher-Child Interaction

1. Maintain effective communication with children that fosters physical, social, emotional
and intellectual development.

2. Use questioning, probing and problem solving as interactions which promote learning.

3. Participate in opportunities for children to understand, acquire and use verbal and non

verbal means of communicating thoughts and feelings.

4. Interact with children on their eye level using a voice which is pleasant and encouraging.

5 Participate with children in small and large groups and individually.

6. Use conflict resolution techniques which are appropriate for the developmental level of the child.

7. Provide for smooth transition from one activity to another activity without requiring the

children to wait.

8. Assist children with self-care activities.

C. Adult-Adult Interaction

1. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers through open

communication, sharing resources and support professional development.

2. Develop supportive relationships with parents by respecting their child-rearing values and

by sharing information about the ages and stages of children's development to improve

their understanding of their own children.

3. Participate in efforts to maintain a cooperative atmosphere in the workplace by exhibiting a pleasant and cooperative attitude.

D. Parent Involvement

1. Encourage parent participation, orient parents to classroom, and attend parent group functions.

2. Maintain effective communication and a professional relationship with parents.

3. Assist in conducting and documenting parent conferences and/or home visits as needed or

required.

E. Program Management

1. Be aware of and abide by child abuse and neglect reporting requirements and all licensing

regulations pertaining to the care of young children.

2. Assist in requesting supplies and equipment when needed and according to procedure.

3. Assist in maintaining an orderly classroom.

4. Report all accidents immediately to supervisor.

5. Participate in program wide recruitment.

6. Attend all required meetings and training opportunities.

7. Assist in completing written lesson plans.

8. Assist in writing and submitting appropriate reports accurately and on time.

9. Assist and contribute to the recruitment of children and families eligible to participate in the program

10. Timely recruitment and enrollment according to a timeline distributed in January of each

year by the Director of the Child Development Program will be a priority. Enrollment goals will be assigned to meet full funded enrollment on a timely basis. Not achieving timely enrollment reflects on job performance. Not only does it severely affects the economic health of the Center, but means children and families enrolled late do not receive a full Head Start year of early childhood education and family support.

F. Professionalism

1. When implementing strategies for meeting the goals of the program, make decisions based

on knowledge of child development theories and appropriate practices.

2. Abide by the NAEYC Code of Ethics.

3. Continuously assess skills and knowledge and in conjunction with the Center Director, plan
strategies for improvement and growth.

4. Actively pursue appropriate professional development opportunities which increase

knowledge and skills by actively participating in in-service staff development programs, by successfully completing early childhood education college courses when appropriate and by attending local, state, regional and national conferences.

5. Perform any other job-related tasks as assigned

G. Bus Monitor

1. Ensure the safety of the children as first (1) priority.

2. Properly secure the children in appropriate height and weight child restraint system.

3. Attend all trainings relating to Transportation (First Aid, CPR, and Transportation Policies and Procedures).

4. Fill out and turn in appropriate paper work.

5. Must wear seat belt unless assisting children.

6. Must conduct a Pre- Trip and Post- Trip inspection (which includes looking under seats) for children or any articles that may be left on bus.

7. Assist in emergency evacuations as well as being prepared to administer CPR/First Aid while on the bus.

8. Perform safe loading and unloading procedures.

9. Create a seating chart using the children's name and picture.

10. Must get teacher/assistant teacher to sign off on the daily transportation roster sheet of the children that are assigned to their room.

11. Check attendance in the morning (am route) and evening (pm route).

12. Maintain updated emergency contact information with family advocates for each child on the bus.

13. Make sure items are properly stored on the bus.

14. Must be available for and work willingly on other assigned tasks.

III. Essential Qualifications

1. Minimum AA in field or AA out of field with 18

semester hours in ECE/CD and 2 years early childhood work experience. Bilingual(Spanish) preferred.

2. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, students and volunteers.

3. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively the duties required for the job including verbal ability to communicate, auditory capacity to respond to children and adults, visual ability to complete written assignments and physical ability to complete assignments given accommodations as required by law.

4. Demonstrated willingness to actively pursue appropriate professional development opportunities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, color, peripheral depth and the ability to adjust focus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
