Position Summary

The Systems Engineer works with other infrastructure and server engineers to create, validate and deploy software using MECM (Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager). This role requires advanced level knowledge of MECM packaging, patching and deployment practices, including reviewing log files for post-deployment troubleshooting. They possess strong working knowledge and experience supporting enterprise desktop hardware and software and provide escalation support to Level 2 desktop technicians and Associate Engineers.

Areas of Responsibility


  • Software deployment technology

    • Create and manage enterprise collections (e.g. testing, exceptions and etc.) for deployments and patch cycles.
    • Create, manage and test collections for patching (e.g. 1st, 2nd and 3rd party) and application deployments.
    • Install, manage and troubleshoot software distribution points.
    • Manage and support the MECM console - roughly 6,000 plus endpoints.
    • Troubleshoot - new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes.

  • Coordinate, test, and implement enhancements or new releases of endpoint Operating System and application packages (physical and virtual).
  • Evaluate current endpoint deployment configurations and practices, focusing on continual process improvement.
  • Ensure business application packages integrate with the MECM application framework.
  • Provide support and input on the quality of the end user desktop experience, including hardware and software evaluation and selection, image maintenance, virtual technologies, and capacity planning.
  • Employ tools to distribute content enterprise-wide using managed/targeted collections and deployment/patching cycles.
  • Provide progress and status reports for application and patch deployments.
  • Manage business unit software deployment requests from initial discovery meetings to testing and deployment.
  • Create deployment packages, prepare testing scenarios, implement changes required by test team, and ensure changes align to customer requirements.
  • Update and patch monthly enterprise endpoint images including department profiles.
  • Present change requests during the monthly Change Advisory Board (CAB) meetings.
  • Fulfill end user and change requests for operational engineering assignments pertaining to software deployments, security updates, and overall configuration of client endpoints.
  • Create support documentation for the team and peer groups as needed to include standard operation procedures, general technical bulletins, and troubleshoot workflows as needed.
  • Participate in weekly department meetings to review current vulnerabilities (e.g. zero-day, critical, high, medium, and low) impacting the enterprise and discuss deployment assignments.
  • Follows process documentation and checklists to ensure standardization of work, proactively recommending documentation changes, if necessary.
  • Identify opportunities to automate operational processes across the desktop environment.
  • Participate in product introduction team/development meetings related to delivering new applications.
  • Provide escalation support to Service Desk and End User Support leads, when all technician and associate engineer troubleshooting options have been exhausted.
  • Mentor junior level engineers.
  • Completes project tasks as assigned. Meets project dates. Schedules installations/ upgrades and provides system maintenance in accordance with IT procedures. Works on site-specific department projects and/or sub-projects. Identify opportunities to automate operational processes across the desktop environment.

  • 5-7 years Desktop Support, Field Support or related engineering work experience.
  • Advanced understanding of MECM, WSUS, and Windows patching processes.
  • Experience working in an Active Directory environment including Local and Group Policy design and have working proficiency of Forests, Domains, Trusts.
  • Advanced understanding and experience with LAN/WAN/Internet environments (TCP/IP knowledge -- IP addresses, subnet masks, default gateway...etc.)
  • Advanced understanding of Windows PKI, Certificates.
  • Scripting / automation (Python, Shell, Bash, PowerShell) with API experience.
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, LDAP.
  • Working knowledge of Windows 2016/2012r2/2008R2 operating systems and Active Directory in a global enterprise environment.
  • Experience working with physical and virtual servers/workstations.
  • Familiarity with VMWare technologies.
  • Familiarity with network standards.
  • Comfortable with contacting third parties for support.
  • Able to write detailed system and user documentation when necessary.
  • Provide after-hours support for service escalations when required.
  • Change management technologies (Chef, Salt, Puppet, Ansible, SCCM).
  • Demonstrated project management skills from both team member and leader roles.
  • Analytical thinking for effective problem determination and correction within the department and in the user community is essential. The ability to work independently, make decisions under pressure, while providing timely and responsive services are the keys to this position.
  • Excellent time and project management skills, customer service and interpersonal skills, system diagnostic and communication (written and oral) are critical for success in this position.
