Manager of Purchasing

York, PA


Summary - This position is part Voith's Global Indirect Procurement organization (GBS NPM North America) and is responsible for supporting the sourcing and purchasing processes for the Voith Hydro and Turbo business group indirect material & field service needs across North America. This is an important, high visibility opportunity to help support and drive the North America purchasing team multi-year strategy.

Positions reporting to the Purchasing Manager role include Buyers / Project Buyers and Sourcing Managers. The scope of the role is broad, spanning high value / complex field project site procurement sourcing requirements, process efficiency initiatives, value creation / cost reduction projects, and operational purchasing excellence. This role requires an individual with strong leadership characteristics, a progressive mind-set, excellent interpersonal communications, high energy, problem solving skills, flexibility and an end-to-end customer + business centric perspective. Experience with supporting large scale civil engineering type project purchasing environments, process development and continuous improvement efforts is important in this role.

Responsibilities:


  • Proactively partners/collaborates with Project Management, Field Service, HSE and Operations on Procurement needs. Represents Purchasing at project meetings and is the primary day to day contact for supporting the business groups purchasing requirements.

  • As required, negotiate / implement price improvements / agreements / contracts and monitor compliance to supply agreements (incl. demand analyses, price, payment, on-time delivery).

  • Leads and develops direct reports (sourcing managers/project buyers/ operational buyers) located in the US and Canada responsible for $40M to $50M in annual purchases.

  • Support the material group management teams to shape goals, plans and strategy. Give feedback as needed (re: savings programs, supplier performance, project funnel, etc.)

  • Execute spot and project sourcing events in line with the NPM Quick Guide and Material Group (category) strategy.

  • Ensure Purchasing needs for the assigned business operating units are executed against defined requirements, Material Group Strategies and Voith policies & processes.

  • Ensure his/her team executes the end to end procurement processes supporting the business OU(s) against the defined / approved supply base, purchasing channels and methods. Ensure any flow down requirements are included with quotations, selection criteria & PO's.

  • Support FIN reconciliations and supplier inquiries as needed with Finance and OU's.

  • Measure / improve purchasing process efficiency & recommend improvement opportunities (automation, purchasing channels, preferred suppliers / agreements, work-flow design, etc.).


  • Ensure excellent purchasing service levels with OUs, ensure defined NPM processes are being complied with and ascertain that POs and contracts protect Voith's legal interests.

  • Monitor the performance of on-time delivery / correct pricing and take first line corrective action if needed. Participate in preparing/delivering quarterly business reviews with stakeholders.

  • Support purchasing KPl's related to cost, cash, service level and efficiency.

  • Maintain regular communication and drive compliance with requisitioners in the business unit and function as the first point of escalation with suppliers.

  • Engage with project teams to support project site or OU purchasing requirements to project timelines, anticipate and mitigate risk due to delays/missing material or services.

  • Ensure defined department budgets are met; execute Voith defined Finance and HR processes.

  • Interact with Voith project teams to coordinate supplier support for field site locations.

Qualifications -


  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management or Engineering.

  • Strong leader and ability to influence.

  • Strong communications & interpersonal skills.

  • Self-starter / motivated / problem solver.

  • Strategic thinking skills but also can be hands-on and apply a pragmatic approach.

  • Organized. Ability to multiplex projects and diverse stakeholder needs / perspectives.

  • Negotiation skills and ability to value different economic alternatives and influence others.

  • 5 years of continued progressive growth experience in purchasing/engineering PM roles including sourcing or project management / continuous improvement.

  • Indirect purchasing experience (Direct material experience also highly preferred).

  • 3-5 years of managerial experience (preferred).

  • Proficiency in a relevant ERP Materials Management Module System (e.g. SAP-preferred, Oracle/JDE, M/S Dynamics).

  • Experience utilizing eSourcing / eCatalogue / eContract technology platforms (such as Ariba, Jagger, Coupa, or internally developed company platforms, etc.).

  • MBA - Preferred

  • Lean / Six Sigma experience - Preferred
