Job Description

Torch Technologies, a 100% employee-owned company is seeking a mid-level Data Scientist to become a key member of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Engineering team, providing data engineering expertise, while conducting research and development for artificial Intelligence and data science projects. This includes working with many of the following technologies: data pipelines, data services, operational data stores, data warehouses, data marts, big data stores, data mining, big data visualization and experiment designs. The right individual will display both a passion for data science and leading a cultural change in how data is used throughout the organization regarding these efforts.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Determine what question, if answered would present the most value to MDA.


• Develop the most valuable data product for data analytics.


• Adaptive highest quality models, techniques and tools to solving MDA most vexing problems.


• Research and develop statistical learning models for data analysis


• Collaborate with product management and engineering departments to understand company needs and devise possible solutions


• Keep up-to-date with latest technology trends (e.g. MLOps and AutoML).


• Communicate results and ideas to key decision makers


• Implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies as needed for specific models or analysis


• Optimize joint development efforts through appropriate database use and project design


• Work in a collaborative, multi-discipline team contributing to projects spanning Big Data, ML/AI, Cloud Architectures and Orchestration, Cyber, and Systems and Software Engineering.

Job Requirements

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Science or Engineering plus five (5) or more years' with SAS, ETL/ELT, data processing, database programming and data analytics, or a Master of Science degree plus four (4) or more years' experience in a technical environment is required.

Required Clearance:

Current Department of Defense SECRET clearance.

Desired Skills:

Experience with a broad variety of enterprise and Cloud data, software, and hardware solutions. Experience with design, deployment, management, and documentation of cloud and IaaS/PaaS solutions using a commercial cloud provider (e.g. AWS, Azure). Knowledge of cloud-provider platform features, capabilities, and security features, including utilizing related SDK, APIs, Command Line Interface, orchestration templating (e.g. infra-as-code tools, YAML) and other tools. Ability to configure and deploy on-prem computer, networking, storage, and database Cloud services

• Competency in in Agile Development

Required Qualifications and Skills:

Extensive background in data mining and statistical analysis. Skills developing correlative data models that support descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Able to understand various data structures and common methods in data transformation. Experience developing in Python, R and SQL in support of big data analytics, machine learning and NLP, Neural Networks, and Deep Learning analytics. Expertise in Cloud technology Experience with CI/CD Implemented DevSecOps controls (DoD CIO & AF CSO) Proficient in data security management Prefer experience with open platform (Kubernetes/Istio), microservice/service mesh architectures, and leverage event-driven behavior across the entire portfolio
