We are looking for the Director of Product to lead a team focused on evolving our public-facing digital products. In this role, you will partner closely with editorial, advertising, marketing and technical teams to build powerful storytelling experiences for our web and mobile audiences, while evolving our monetization opportunities and subscription platform.

You will oversee a growing team focusing on our primary digital experiences. This will include our web and mobile apps, digital advertising revenue, experimentation and subscription touchpoints. Driven-by-data and clear outcome goals, you will oversee each element of our consumer-facing touchpoints and how they combine to serve our readers. This includes our evolving ad map, subscription messaging, performance, discovery and recommendation. You will work closely with editorial and the CMS team to build out new storytelling elements, while improving the way we discover our journalism through search, curation, smart packaging and recommendation elements across platforms.

This position will be based in our El Segundo, CA office, but is currently remote.

Job Description

Responsibilities:


  • Lead a growing team of product managers focused on web, mobile apps, digital advertising and subscription/experimentation.

  • Evolve our mobile-first web and the mobile app experiences for the readers/subscribers of Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union-Tribune.

  • Iterate and build contemporary and performant advertising experiences across product lines.

  • Drive a best-in-class subscription platform, based on key outcomes and user-value.

  • Employ test-driven feature evolution of our web platforms, guided by hypothesis and multivariate testing. This may have applications in the mobile app space.

  • Maintain and look for opportunities for improving performance and speed of experience.

  • Improve engagement in-app with improved discovery, recirculation and UX for our web and mobile apps.

  • Build unique, app-specific features to power our journalism and attract new users.

  • Evolve our current Advertising experience, bolstering a balance between overall experience and revenue.

  • Ensure solid search growth through SEO technical best practice and search-focused features.

  • Document, maintain and broadcast our roadmap to inform the “when” and the “why” of what we build.

  • Leverage data as a core tenet of product planning and development, focused on outcomes.

  • Lead requirements gathering, prioritize features, manage the scope of business requirements, and keep focus on project deliverables.

  • Define, organize, and document product briefs, user stories, business and functional requirements for enhancements.

  • Work with executive management and stakeholders to define, analyze and report on key indicators.

  • Practice a culture of transparency and communication.

  • Cultivate understanding and excitement for our projects with our engineers and designers.

  • Perform other related duties and assignments as required. Travel occasionally to meet with stakeholders.
     

Qualifications:


  • Eight+ years of experience working in product management.

  • Two+ years of leading high-performing teams.

  • Working knowledge of contemporary software development frameworks (SCRUM, Agile).

  • Experience in working with web experiences for large audiences, subscriptions service a plus.

  • Experience in the mobile app space for a consumer brand.

  • Working knowledge of common tools for content creation and management.

  • A passion of the ever-changing media industry and publishing landscape and a curiosity about where it’s headed.

  • Ability to think strategically, gain input and buy in from stakeholders on strategic vision, and oversee execution.

  • Track record of developing strong performing team members.

  • Strong and proven skills in creating quality documents such as product requirements/use cases, functional specifications, test plans and test cases.

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate business and market problems and apply technology and domain knowledge to identify appropriate solutions.

  • Ability to multi-task and work self-sufficiently in a fast paced, fluid work environment.

  • Solution oriented, with the ability to think critically and creatively and to inspire a culture of innovation, execution, collaboration and accountability.
