Overview

IDC is seeking a Research Director for our Product Innovation Strategies practice, with a strong understanding of the digital transformation of Innovation, R&D, and Engineering taking place across industry today. This transformation includes collaboration within the enterprise and ecosystem in support of business strategy, sales & marketing, supply chain, manufacturing, and service, leveraging core technologies such as PLM, ERP, SCM, and MES in concert with new digital technologies and platforms. Knowledge of this transformation would include a thorough understanding of the providers of software, infrastructure, and services that can support these efforts by delivering the scale and speed that organizations in every industry need.

The position requires an individual who has a working understanding of the technology that end user organizations are leveraging today to complement existing investments and optimize product innovation, such as cloud, AI/ML, AR/VR, and mobile in support of ideation, design, simulation, collaboration, manufacturing, and commercialization of products and services. This includes knowledge of how and why different domains within these organizations – management, IT, engineering/R&D, supply chain, application development, operations, production, service, and customer experience - work together for the development and optimization of new and existing products and services. This individual will also need to be able to lift discussions covering these topics up to a business value and business results discussion, focusing on metrics that can form the basis for justifying investment.

Responsibilities

This position requires regular writing on industry trends, events, and technology developments including insightful and provocative thought leadership on various topics related to the design, development, and commercialization of products and services. The Research Director, Product Innovation Strategies also should have the ability to produce research that spans technology analysis and business strategy. The individual will work with the IDC sales organization to grow a subscription base and with our custom research organization to scope and execute individual projects for clients.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Assure that the research requirements of the program are met
  • Support efforts by the IDC sales organization to help secure new business
  • Contribute to research across the Product innovation strategies and manufacturing insights research community, assuring consistency and mutual benefit
  • Contribute research and thought leadership to consulting projects
  • Communicate clearly and with value to C-level executives at technology suppliers and buyers
  • Collect industry trends, and present the larger ecosystem transformation story
  • Quickly synthesize data from various sources – interviews, surveys, secondary research and other IDC research
  • Ability to clearly deliver insights and report data analysis in a clear and actionable manner


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, MBA a plus; or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of related field or in research, with several years of work in directly relevant coverage areas
  • Keen interest to collaborate, and also work independently
  • Self-starter mindset with a passion for working in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to speak publicly at events and/or webcasts
  • Proven record of multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and delivering projects on time/budget
  • Demonstrated ability in working under pressure with competing deadlines.
  • Ability and interest in collaborating in a global environment.
  • Willingness/ability to travel to various events as required (post-COVID) for presentations or engaging with customers (30-40%) as circumstances dictate.
