Job Title: Materials Technician

Location: Neenah, WI

We are seeking a material and process technician in our Neenah, WI office for our Global Research & Engineering organization to work in our experimental lab and pilot facilities with occasional business travel for scale-up trials at vendors and K-C production facilities.

Position Responsibilities:

Carry out process and material research & development work employing working process knowledge of experimental prototyping and processing, spanning polymer extrusion of films and fibers, wetlaid processing of natural fibers, airlaid processing of fibers and particulate blends, and quality test lab characterization techniques. Willingness to learn new areas of bench laboratory and pilot line processing and prototyping. For example, if skilled in fiber or film extrusion, must also be willing to learn wetlaid or airlaid processes. Polymer extrusion responsibilities can include forming processes and converting unit operations such as compounding, thin film and fiber formation including film and fiber stretching, composite formation, injection molding.   Wetlaid responsibilities can include handsheet formation at lab scale as well as working with pilot machine operators to carry out pulping, slurry formation, pumping, headbox function, draining, drying and winding operations. Airlaid responsibilities can include lab-scale handsheet formation with multiple fiber and particulate types as well as working with pilot machine operators to produce pilot trial quantities of material for testing and prototyping. Conduct bench laboratory and pilot line prototyping of materials across process methods listed above as well as supporting commercial scale trials when needed. Prototyping with solvent based preparation or other unique methods may also be required. Conduct physical testing of R&D samples for mechanical and absorbent properties: tensile testing, microscopy, wettability, absorbency, and others. Interacting with diverse team with flexibility plus providing written and verbal updates in professional R&E setting. Authoring written summaries, updates, trial reports, Technical Letters.  Contributing to Technical Reports, Powerpoint presentations, external publications. Conduct all communications and transactions with the utmost integrity and honesty so as to build an unimpeachable business reputation.  Ensure communication of project plans and results to partners, customers, and other team members. LEAN Continuous Improvement programs within K-C Material Science laboratories including 5S, computerized sample storage and retrieval systems, creating improvement ideas for step change experimental efficiencies in R&E workstream. Contribute to an environment in which all team members are respected regardless of their individual differences and are motivated to improve both their individual and team contributions to achieve desired business results. Visibly demonstrate that safety is a value by following safety procedures, maintaining a safe workplace and complying with safety rules. Develop equipment, processes and products that meet safety codes, policies and guidelines. Actively participate in achieving organization and personal safety objectives. Willing to travel approximately 1-2 weeks every 2 months. Must be able to work in a team environment and meet deadlines while working independently.

Position Qualifications:

Approximately 5+ years work or equivalent experience & accomplishments in one or more process fields including polymer extrusion, wetlaid, airlaid, or quality test lab with demonstrated laboratory skills, depth and associated business impact.  Knowledge of extrusion process principles, scientific analysis, project management, LEAN problem solving, basic equipment maintenance, translation from bench to pilot to commercial scale, comprehensive workplace safety systems.   Demonstrated understanding and impact in process development, statistical control and experimentation, and process feasibility demonstration. Processes may include, but are not limited to, polymer extrusion, wetlaid, and airlaid systems and underlying material properties which drive processes and performance of resulting materials. Must be able to work flexibly in a team environment, including learning new processes and driving for results in order to meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills - written and verbal. Demonstrated skills in the areas of collaboration, innovation, decisiveness, multi-tasking, and conflict resolution are important for success. Willing to travel 20% of the time – occasional international travel could be possible. Working knowledge of machine interface controls, data analysis tools, and computer systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP, Sharepoint, etc.
