Primary Role
Provide planning, forecasting, reporting and financial analysis in support of American Water’s regulated and market based businesses.
Perform in depth analysis of moderate to complex financial and operational information.
Prepare reports in support of analysis (graphs, exhibits, PowerPoint presentations, variance explanations as an example).
Interact with various levels of management and various departments (both internal/external to finance) such as HR, Legal, Operations, Investor Relations, Accounting, External Reporting, etc.
Work under minimal supervision; independently handle presentations and/or work efforts with senior or executive management.
Key Accountabilities
Analyze moderate to complex financial and operational information, including trends, variances and related root drivers (comparing actual/budget/forecasts)
Perform ad hoc analysis and special assignments as requested
Act as a mentor to junior staff members to aid in their development
Review reports created by peers or junior staff members and assist in key finding analysis
Perform financial forecasting, financial modeling and trend analysis
Drive “financial best practice” by assessing and measuring the on-going effectiveness of existing business applications and technologies
Work with key stakeholders in the business (finance teams, operational representatives, accounting and others) to deliver effective analysis of results (plan, forecast and actuals).
Analyze integrated financial statement results, review financial/operational metrics, prepare key performance variance analysis and explanations, and assist in leading the budgetary process
Prepare financial updates, including relevant analyses versus prior periods and providing forecasts/budgets, examining associated risk/opportunities
Knowledge/Skills
Detailed and demonstrated knowledge of:
Accounting concepts and understanding of analytical concepts for financial analysis as well as US GAAP accounting practices
Audit, review and analysis of business and financial records
Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel) with expertise in Microsoft Excel Advanced
Ability to identify the need for and develop new financial analysis requirements and models
Knowledge/Experience of SAP and/or Hyperion is preferred (not required)
Strong written communication skills, along with clear and concise verbal skills are critical to this role
Ability to effectively communicate complex financial analysis to business leaders
Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
MBA, CPA, CFA or advanced degrees preferred
Minimum of five years of pertinent financial experience required
