Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Power and Energy Systems Department is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a career as a Power Systems Research Engineer (PSRE)!

EES&T's role and mission's to develop and advance clean, smart, and secure energy systems essential to national security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. It embodies science and engineering functions that contribute enabling technologies for today's national energy portfolio. It also augments the country's technical ability to collaborate on and overcome critical energy and water challenges that already impact tomorrow's energy choices. This position supports and integrates actions, activities, projects, & initiatives of the EES&T Directorate's Integrated Mission Plan and other INL research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) efforts.

The Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate at INL is seeking a staff research engineer with experience in power systems engineering. Candidates for this position should have expertise in at least one of the following focus areas:


  1. Distribution Systems - including distributed energy resources (DERs) modeling and control or distribution system management solutions to enable higher DER penetration

  2. Microgrids - including design, control, or energy management system development

  3. Transmission - including modeling of bulk power system generation technologies or expertise in transmission system stability, reliability, and resilience

  4. Dynamic and Transient energy systems modeling - some responsibilities include, ideation, planning, coordination, and implementation of power systems projects

  5. Experience with power system testing - using digital real-time simulation environments and using power and/or controller hardware-in-the-loop is a plus

The PSRE will be expected to serve as key team member on research projects, contribute to technical capability development, and help prepare documents for dissemination to research sponsors. They should have prior experience working both individually and in teams in a fast-paced, high-tempo, research environment. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the implementation and design of research projects is required. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are also required.

Minimum Requirements:


  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, System Engineering or related field |Master's degree plus 1 year experience |Bachelor's degree plus 2 years' experience.

  • Demonstrated technical understanding, research collaborations, and professional recognition through an established publication and/or patents record in one or more of the topics listed in the position role.

  • Demonstrated proposal writing and research project execution experience.

  • A background and solid understanding of controller design for diverse use cases and in the context of institutional decision making (e.g. maximizing cost-benefit in real-world applications) is a must.

Preferred Requirements:


  • A PhD and two years' experience.

  • Experience and an understanding of grid architectures, controller design, power conversion systems, multilevel inverters, transient energy systems modeling/analysis, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

  • Understanding of power markets, utility decision making, grid architectures, complex and flexible industrial processes (e.g. hydrogen production through electrolysis).
