Job Title:  Associate or Senior News & Views Editor (Physics), Nature

News & Views is a highly popular section of Nature that publishes timely, readable and authoritative articles about the latest developments in science, written by specialists for non-specialists. This post involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team of editors to commission and edit News & Views articles about physics and the Earth sciences, working to tight deadlines.

The main responsibilities are:

• Commissioning News & Views articles, which requires an understanding of what constitutes a breakthrough suitable for bringing to the attention of Nature’s readers;


• Editing News & Views pieces, which requires awareness of the demands of non-specialist readers, developmental editing skills and tact in dealing with authors.


• Contributing to ongoing ‘housekeeping’ tasks for the section, e.g. maintaining documents to keep track of commissioning/editing status of articles, attending meetings concerning News & Views, collating metadata, contributing to social media.


• Dealing with unsolicited contributions and/or complaints promptly and courteously.


• Making and maintaining connections with the relevant manuscript editors at Nature, and with external advisors.


• Editing other content for Nature in support of the magazine’s goals, if required.

The following qualifications and skills are essential:

• A higher degree (master degree or PhD) in an area of physics


• Research experience


• Excellent organizational ability and written communication skills


• A critical and lively interest in science in general

 

Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrably strong interest in the communication of science. Editing experience is advantageous, but not essential if candidates can otherwise demonstrate a flair for writing and communication of complex ideas.
