New York Institute of Technology seeks an Associate Director, Application Development and Data Management, located at the Long Island, NY (Old Westbury) campus. The Associate Director reports directly to the Sr. Director, Enterprise Applications & Decision Support Systems.

The Associate Director of Application Development and Data Management (ADDM) is a hands-on role that is responsible for the construction, support, documentation and oversight of activities related to the design, development, and implementation of NYIT's business applications, data management ecosystem and enterprise information systems, including contemporary data integration and data management strategies. This individual will apply proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of industry best practices to guide his/her development team on issues related to the research, design, development, and deployment of secure data and application solutions by analyzing and validating business requirements for new and changing existing administrative processes, reporting/BI needs, and information systems.

Responsibilities

    Provide technical leadership; implement/support enterprise system integrations and application development work; provide expert advice and hands-on assistance to analysts/programmers for integration and custom application development efforts.
  • Lead the development and support of new/existing applications, ensuring that projects match business needs and requirements; ensure secure coding practices are employed, identify and resolve systems issues, conduct pre- and post-testing of systems and make proper modifications.

  • Conduct feasibility studies for software and data system products; research and make recommendations on products and services to facilitate build/buy cost/benefit decisions.

  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of how New York Tech's data ecosystem - the enterprise applications, databases, data interfaces and core business processes - interact with one another and the end user experience with particular emphasis on the effective design of the data stored by information systems.

  • Review new software features and other changes related to application development and data intensive systems; support technical staff in the resolution of issues relevant to reporting, programming, and performance.

  • Work with supervisor and other senior IT staff to define data standards and models for operational data stores, data marts and data warehousing; develop conceptual, logical and physical data models to meet requirements and strategies; assist with the development of models across New York Tech to ensure adherence to sound data management principles and where possible, the reuse of data.

  • Proactively coordinate with other departments (internal and external to IT) to ensure clearcommunication of enterprise design/development approaches, workflow and data standards, and reporting/BI requirements; review documentation developed by other departments to ensure adherence to data standards and consistency of information to analysts and developers; modify documentation and training materials as necessary.

  • Effectively collaborate with external resources such as consultants and vendors on new technology implementations, including upgrades, patches, integrations with external business applications, enhancements to existing application modules, and new software implementations.

  • Use coaching, mentorship, skill development, and recognition to build and sustain high-performing teams and strong employee engagement. Evolve team to a versatile software development and data management model.

  • Develop and/or participate in various training seminars, workshops and short courses; develop supporting documentation as needed.

  • Other duties as needed by the department and defined by the supervisor.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline plus 5 years of relevant experience required. An advanced degree in a technical discipline, and relevant certifications, such as Oracle or SQL Server Certified is preferred. Comparable success and work experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements.

  • Supervisory experience required.

  • Experience in higher education including demonstrated knowledge of higher education organization structure and business practices and the associated systems and platforms (student information systems, finance/HCM, academic advising, student recruitment) preferred.

  • Demonstrated domain knowledge in at least one of the following areas, and working knowledge in the others:

    • Full stack development (e.g. PHP, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, C#, C++, etc.)

    • Database and/or data modeling tools

    • Business Intelligence (BI), ETL, data warehousing

    • IT system integrations and real-time communication (e.g. Restful APIs, web services, etc.)



  • Understanding of secure code development/control and versioning and data security best practices for balancing availability with security concerns.

  • Technical knowledge of various platforms to ensure applications and infrastructure stacks are current and supported.

  • Experience coordinating, planning and organizing upgrades of systems and technology.

  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills necessary to plan elements of development and/or implementation project, develop objectives & requirements, assign tasks to team members, and manage large- and small-scale development projects.

  • Experience managing complex technology development projects across multiple technology stacks.

  • Proven technical competency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to communicate effectively with people at varying levels of digital and data fluency, and the ability to establish collaborative working relationships at all contact levels of the University is required.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead a team; ability to set priorities and work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects; ability to communicate progress/problems to appropriate personnel effectively.
  • Team player with excellent consulting skills and a fun, but professional presence required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a high degree of integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information required.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends on an as-needed basis is required (infrequent).
