Job Description

Are you an engineer with experience in mechanical design? Are you looking for a challenging position at a company with excellent benefits, great work/life balance, and job stability? The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is offering a unique opportunity for an experienced mechanical designer to help develop plans and design concepts to deliver a new or modified test reactor by 2040. The work will be performed in collaboration with reactor, plant, and materials engineers from NNL and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and will support test sponsors from NNL, the Department of Energy (DOE) and others. Project personnel are currently preparing a mission needs statement, developing project and functional requirements, and developing pre-conceptual design alternatives. Design work to support the selection of a preferred concept is expected to start in 2022. Alternatives under consideration range from making significant enhancements to the current test reactor to development of a newly designed thermal test reactor complex, including integration of irradiation examination capabilities that do not exist today.

Although test reactor requirements differ from those for a Navy fleet or prototype reactor, knowledge of the NNL core design process and successful and innovative design experience will be keys to success. The successful candidate will initially be responsible for planning and managing all aspects of the conceptual mechanical design and analysis work, including design of reactor heavy equipment, core structural components, and fuel system design. Mechanical design assessments, such as sizing calculations and fit-up studies, will be required. Structural analyses will likely be performed using commercial computer software (e.g., Abaqus or ANSYS) and hand calculations. However, the candidate will be responsible for helping to establish the appropriate digital mechanical engineering tools for this collaborative effort consistent with NNL and INL information technology frameworks. The bulk of this work will be performed on unclassified networks, allowing part-time teleworking. The successful candidate will also be responsible to help establish project and functional requirements in collaboration with nuclear and thermal-hydraulic engineers on the reactor concepts team. Extensive interfacing and coordination with other organizations will be required.

Required Skills

Senior:

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant design experience; or

  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant design experience

Principal:

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant design experience; or

  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant design experience

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with design of reactor heavy equipment, core structural components and fuel systems

  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements

  • Structural analysis experience, including use of finite element analysis computer codes (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS)

  • Familiarity with scripting software (e.g., Python)

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes

  • Experience with project management

  • Experience as a team leader or contributing member

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
