Shift Manager - By-Products Operations





Job Description

The Shift Manager-BP Operations position at Cleveland-Cliffs Monessen has overall responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Coke Plant By-Products systems. They provide the tools and other resources necessary to the crew that they supervise to ensure the safe, smooth, and efficient operation of the facility. This position strives to improve reliability across Coke Plant Operations to decrease cost, improve production, and help meet customer needs.



Responsibilities


  • Responsible for managing a crew of approximately 9 hourly employees.

  • Indirect supervisory responsibilities over Shift Maintenance personnel as needed to ensure a safe, efficient operation.

  • Maintains cooperative relationship with Process Engineers, hourly employees, Union officials, Security, Safety Manager, Division Manager, and Environmental Manager.

  • Comply with all corporate and plant Safety, Health, and Environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Reports to Management the progress and performance of the operation during their shift.

  • Responsibilities include trouble shooting, supporting continuous improvement activities, working with outside contractors/vendors, and communicating key performance measures to his/her Supervisor.

  • Promptly and properly reports all incidents, injuries, damages, spills and/or releases.

  • Perform housekeeping activities in work area.

  • Responsible for some hazardous waste management functions. Perform physical waste activities (e.g., moving and labeling containers, collecting samples, inspection etc.).

  • Generate or contact hazardous waste as part of production/maintenance process. May utilize accumulation container(s).

  • Prevent chemical spills and report any that occur to your direct supervisor.

  • Awareness of hazards when working around moving equipment.

  • Assists in preparing SH&E reports and documentation.

  • Promptly reports and if possible, corrects all unsafe acts and/or conditions.

  • Acts as positive safety advocate by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) required by the applicable PPE hazard assessment.

  • Ensures training conducted as appropriate.

  • Addresses union issues as they arise.




Minimum Requirements


  • Two-year technical or supervisory degree, or high school diploma with significant experience.

  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.

  • Experience in an industrial or heavy manufacturing environment preferably in a steel manufacturing union facility.

  • Self-directed, customer focused, flexible, and willing to work in a team environment, with a most critical focus on providing the tools, training, and support for a safe work environment. Comfortable in a union atmosphere and able to prioritize and direct union personnel.

  • Good working knowledge of fully integrated steel mill operations

  • Available to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, in a multi-level organization that operates 24/7, and work extended hours as needed.

  • Proven team building skills, works well with others of diverse backgrounds, and able to motivate others.

  • Proven communication (verbal and written), analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Must be able to work in a hot, dusty environment. Climbing stairs, ladders, and walking inclines. Able to work/walk safely on uneven surfaces. Able to work outdoors in all weather.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred Requirements


  • Bachelor's Degree in supervision, technology, or related discipline.

  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience in steel mill, manufacturing, process, production, or equivalent facility.

  • Successful track record working with a represented workforce in a heavy industrial setting.

  • Knowledge of safety and health policies including key components of the OSHA regulations ASTM specifications.
