Position Profile

Primary responsibilities of the Pharmacology function at Jazz are to establish PK/PD/efficacy relationships, explore drug mechanisms of action, and identify predictive disease models and biomarkers in preclinical settings. The successful applicant will play a key role in designing and executing/coordinating in vitro and in vivo biology/pharmacology studies to evaluate the mechanism of action of Jazz drug candidates and support identification of additional indications for clinical stage compounds. This individual will be able to work independently and within the Neuroscience Pharmacology group to generate study designs and protocols, review and author reports and contribute to the authoring and review of relevant sections of regulatory documents. The scientist is expected to collaborate with external CRO's and internal functional areas including DMPK, Clinical Pharmacology, and Translational Sciences, to design, develop and implement strategies to drive the discovery and development of Jazz neuroscience drug candidates. The qualified candidate may also participate in diligence activities.

Essential Functions

    Design and execute experiments to evaluate efficacy, tolerability, biomarkers of efficacy and mechanism of action of Jazz drug candidates.
  • Review scientific literature to evaluate possible new models based on relevant target biology, drug mechanisms of action and disease indications.

  • Collaborate with CROs to outsource in vitro and in vivo biology and pharmacology studies, and with academic labs and/or partners for Jazz-sponsored research via design and development of protocols.

  • Under management guidance, critically review and edit CRO nonclinical study reports, analyze and interpret data, and coordinate report finalization.

  • Independently drive the execution of preclinical pharmacology studies in collaboration with CRO's and academic labs for Jazz-sponsored research, ensuring compliance with Jazz internal processes and procedures.

  • Contribute to the analysis, interpretation, and visualization of nonclinical data in preparation for internal department/team/executive communication, and final study reports. May represent Neuroscience Pharmacology on matrixed project teams or internal initiatives.

  • Maintain a current understanding of relevant literature and methodology, as well as the scientific literature related to the specific Jazz pipeline products and R&D projects.

  • Participate in in vivo pharmacology efforts focused on developing and optimizing relevant animal models to study activity and PK/PD relationship of candidate compounds

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Experience in neurology drug discovery and development is desired; research experience in neurodegenerative diseases, movement disorders and/or epilepsy is preferred.

  • Basic understanding of nervous system anatomy, neurological circuitry, ion channel and neurotransmitter function, and mechanisms of CNS drug action is preferred.

  • Broad experience with small molecule drug discovery (lead selection through Phase 1)

  • Experience in outsourcing, vendor management, and interfacing with internal Finance and Legal groups, establishing and managing consultants and CROs driving timely delivery of clear, accurate, and well-written nonclinical study data

  • Awareness of FDA, EMA, and ICH guidance documents including GLP regulations

  • Experience working in small but effective groups as part of cross-functional teams in highly matrixed organizations

  • Ability to synthesize and interpret diverse, multidisciplinary data sets

  • Strong verbal communication skills accompanied by scientific writing skills, with ability to function within Pharmacology and in matrixed, cross functional teams

  • Must be detail oriented with strong quantitative, analytical, documentation and organizational skills

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office is essential. Experience working with GraphPad Prism and Microsoft Project is a plus.

Required/Preferred Education and Licenses

Doctoral degree (PhD) in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry or other relevant discipline and at least 5 years of neuropharmacology research experience, preferably with at least 2 years of industry experience. Exceptional candidates with Masters or Bachelors Degree and necessary experience may be considered.
