Job Description:



Supports the university's strategic priorities by employing a broad range of communications and public relations skills, including writing, editing, presentations, still photography and video, social media and communications planning, to inform and engage internal and/or external audiences. Position includes direct communication with target audiences, as well as activities that facilitate communication by executives, programs and departments.

Job Duties:


  • Help develop comprehensive communications plans related to a variety of institutional priorities, initiatives, events and issues affecting the university.

  • Increase awareness of UTMB and its mission through strategic media pitches, news releases, newsletter articles, one-pagers and other communications.

  • With Director of Media Relations, serve as official liaison to external news media for all UTMB activities; efforts include but are not limited to arranging interviews, responding to requests for information and escorting media on UTMB property.

  • Work with agency of record to amplify media relations outcomes on targeted topics.

  • Help plan, produce and distribute internal and external communications regarding emergencies and crises with potential to affect business operations and/or institutional reputation.

  • Proactively manage content of institutional web sites and social media accounts targeted to news media and internal audiences.

  • Develop talking points/scripts, messages, presentations, background sheets and other communications support materials for the President and other UTMB leaders, as appropriate.

  • Review materials produced for executive leadership by others to ensure accuracy, proper tone/voice, and consistency with institutional style and message platforms.

  • Manage daily operations of internal communications program, including service on Internal Communications Council, and production and statewide distribution of weekly leader talking points.

  • Produce print and electronic versions of monthly employee newsletter, including maintaining editorial balance consistent with institutional priorities; reporting, writing and editing features; coordinating visuals to accompany stories; and managing production and distribution process.

  • Translate complex scientific and medical information into engaging stories for general readership.

  • Develop and maintain strong source networks throughout the institution in order to proactively pursue relevant stories in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate with Enterprise Support and Department Support communicators to ensure consistency of messaging across the institution.

  • Write for major institutional publications, as appropriate.

  • Perform basic photography and videography tasks, as appropriate.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:


  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong interviewing and fact-finding skills

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

  • High level of sensitivity to confidential information

  • Independent planning and problem-solving skills

  • Proven ability to maintain productivity and professionalism when working under multiple deadlines in a fast-paced, high-change environment

  • Comfort with electronic media, including web content-management system and social media applications

  • Ability to work effectively and directly with people at all levels of the institution

  • Consumer-level photography and video skills

  • Familiarity with PowerPoint

  • Familiarity with design principles (for positions that include newsletter production and/or branding activities)

Preferred Experience:

Seven years media relations and/or social media management

Preferred Education:

Master's Degree with relevant concentration

Salary Range:

Actual salary commensurate with experience.
