Network Engineering (part of CIT Network Services in CIT Infrastructure) is seeking a multi-talented Senior Network Engineer to play a central role in leading the development, innovation, and support of central services & emerging technologies vital to the IT operations and research missions of Cornell University. The Network Engineering team works closely with the Network Systems Engineering team and the Network Facilities & Operations team on day-to-day operational issues and cross-team projects. In addition, the Network Engineering team routinely engages with other groups within CIT, IT professionals across campus, and the research community on a variety of projects and technology initiatives. CIT Network Services is a fast-paced, collaborative, and results-driven organization.

What you will do:

The Senior Network Engineer will have deep technical expertise and be customer-oriented to support multiple networking and communications technologies. The customer base spans the entire Cornell community on the Ithaca Campus, at remote sites across New York state, and beyond. This role will require the candidate to excel in both team and independent work environments. The Network Engineering team also serves as the escalation point and subject matter experts related to major network incidents and operational issues. The team also researches forward-thinking and innovative solutions in a support of current and future campus needs.

The Senior Network Engineer will participate in strategic planning, implementation, and provide the uppermost level of support for a portfolio of technologies, services, and emerging technologies which include:


  • Wireless: WiFi (802.11), 4GLTE/5G, Bluetooth, Zigbee, licensed & unlicensed spectrum, and mobile data


  • Routing: OSPF/OSPF3, BGP/mBGP, IPv4/IPv6, IP Multicast, high-availability topologies


  • Switching: Vlan Tagging (802.1q), Spanning-Tree (802.1)


  • Firewalls & VPN's: Stateful access control policies, IPSEC point-to-point and dial-up VPN's


  • Network Automation: Ansible, Python, other scripting languages


The Network Engineering team shares on-call responsibility for 24x7x365 support.

What will you have:

Bachelor's degree with at least 5 to 7 years designing, troubleshooting network infrastructures in a multi-protocol environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Experience with implementation strategies to refresh hardware and incorporate new technologies


  • Understanding of wireless specifications such as cellular (4G/5G), WiFi (802.11), mobile data


  • Understanding of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies and protocols


  • Familiarity with network automation and scripting principles


  • Self-starter that understands the meaning of facilitated collaboration both within and outside an organization


  • Strong coordination and organization skills essential


  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints and to visualize processes end-to-end


  • Ability to present information effectively to campus leaders and diverse groups


  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly


What is desired:


  • Experience working in Higher Education / R1 Research Universities


  • Experience with Juniper Networks and Aruba Networks equipment


Hybrid Remote:

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the University's decision to limit the number of on-campus employees, the successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely for a limited time, only until the University can permit more employees to work on campus. Once the University permits more employees to work on campus, the successful applicant will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although they may be permitted perform a portion of their work remotely.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
