Job Description:

Performs skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance management techniques to maintain a variety of commercial landscape maintenance and construction vehicles, tractors, snow removal equipment, large commercial diesel trucks, loaders and other equipment. Perform road calls to repair vehicle and equipment on site, as needed. Maintains accurate vehicle/equipment service records and manages shop tools, supplies, safety, and cleanliness. Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities.

Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat or cold for extended periods. Must be able to work in confined spaces underneath vehicles and equipment on lifts. Must be able to climb and work from ladders. Must be able to work effectively in a noisy environment. Regular exposure to gasoline, diesel fuels and other petroleum products.

What we need:


  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites. CDL B with airbrake certification. restricted (truck/trailer) required.

  • Minimum of five years experience in the repairs to a large variety of equipment including lawn maintenance, construction and snow plow equipment to include but not limited to the following equipment types: Tractors (17-45 hp), special turf equipment to include: 2 ft - 16 ft cut mowers, aerifiers, hydro-seeders, sprayers, edgers and vacuum equipment, and heavy construction equipment to include: wheel-loaders, backhoes, excavators, sewer roders, compressors, pickup trucks, large diesel trucks with air brakes and asphalt equipment.

  • Must be OBD II certified (on-board diagnostic system).

  • NYS Inspection Certificate for light and heavy duty required. Must pass a p\re-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Must have experience operating 4 ft - 11 ft hydraulic plows, snow boxes, various salt spreaders and snow blowers.

  • Repairs 2 and 4 cycle fractional-horsepower gasoline engines. Must have experience with stainless, aluminum and cast welding.

  • Must be able to analyze complex mechanical, electrical, fuel and power (transmission) delivery system failures and make repairs.

  • Minimum of two years leadership experience. Ability to organize and schedule work.

  • Ability to write maintenance reports and communicate effectively in writing.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

  • Ability to make repairs and adjustments in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications. Ability to use welding, burning, and brazing equipment to make repairs.

What's preferred but not required

  • Associates Degree in Auto Mechanics or additional technical training school course work desirable.

This is a union position within the United Auto Workers bargaining unit (UAW). The hire rate of pay is $23.98/hr.
