Primary Duties



  • To repair and maintain the HVAC systems in faculty offices, classrooms, athletic facilities, etc. on the Howard University main campus and satellite campuses.

  • Ability to work the assigned shift which may include weekends, on-call, and overtime hours.

  • Realigns fans, motors, air handlers, pumps and/or other building equipment for proper operations. Replaces belts, adjusts pulleys and changes filters. Lubricates motors, air handlers, pumps, linkages, and other building equipment.

  • Replaces compressors, motors, bearings, fans and pulleys.  Cleans evaporators, condensers, relays, chill water coils, humidifiers, air handlers, steam applications, and strainers.  Changes oil in compressors and vacuum pumps.

  • Cleans, electric contacts or relays.  Performs major services, repairs and installations on a wide variety of air conditioning units and packaged type units, split systems and central air conditioning units.  Provides services for heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. 

  • Performs scheduled maintenance tasks, answers emergency or trouble calls, conducts preventive maintenance procedures on equipment.

  • Diagnoses malfunctions and repairs or replaces components such as compressors, valves, evaporates, relays, switches and pneumatic controls.

  • Operate Thompson Facilities Services maintained campus vehicles.

Requirements & Experience



  • 5+ years of work related experience in a university setting.

  • Valid driver’s license from state of residence.

  • Journeyman HVAC License with CFC Universal (required)

  • DC 3rd Class Operating Engineer License (an added bonus)

Education



  • Ability to read and write English.

  • High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) (preferred).

  • Graduate of an accredited apprentice program or vocational school in HVAC (preferred).

Physical Demands


This position is physically demanding. Ability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, lift, pull, push, climb ladders, twist, and walk for a minimum of three hours on the campus terrain. Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. using safe lifting techniques. Work may be performed at all times and inside of various campus buildings where lighting and ventilation may be inadequate. Work is also performed on campus grounds and parking lots.
