The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing and reviewing procedures and equipment involved in the manufacturing process.  The duties include researching automation techniques, testing new systems for efficiency and planning factory layouts to optimize production serving as a bridge between new product development and manufacturing during new product introductions.  Lead in the knowledge of and deployment of wood based CNC equipment.  In addition, this position will be responsible for supporting the planning, execution, and follow-up of continuous improvement activities as determined by the Operations management team.   

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS: 


  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering.  

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment, designing and implementing process improvements.

  • Extensive background and knowledge of CNC equipment used for wood and plastic substrate cutting and fabrication. 

  • Experience in overall woodshop operations.

  • Certificate courses in any Lean Manufacturing disciplines preferred. 

Knowledge of: 


  • Microsoft Office (MS Word, Advanced Excel and Powerpoint)

  • MRP/ERP Systems

  • SolidWorks   

  • Continuous Improvement (Lean) with exposure to Kaizen activities, Time Observations and studies, 5S, 8 Wastes, Mistake-proofing, Standard Work, Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis.

  • Basic Statistical Process Control tools and data collection.

  • Manufacturing systems, processes and procedures.

  • Experience with Engineering procedures such as Engineering Change Notices, New Product Launch toll-gate processes.

  • CNC equipment used for cutting various upholstery and related materials.  

Ability to:


  • Read and understand engineering drawings. Familiarity with GD&T is a plus.

  • Understand and apply work instructions and cosmetic standards to inspect upholstered goods, foam, plastics and metals.

  • Knowledge or familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO13485 is a plus. 

  • Translate English into Spanish and vice versa is a plus.

  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner in both written and oral forms.

  • Interface with all departments to ensure all needs are satisfied.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist and support the Operations Management Team with the following: 


  • Perform time studies and observations for manufacturing cells.

  • Use lean tools to design Value Stream Maps, Cellular Work-flows, design Kanban or Pull Systems and work towards achieving one-piece flow in all production areas.

  • Design and fabricate new equipment (flow racks, work-benches, jigs and fixtures) for use in manufacturing cells. Also determine tools and other needs for all production areas.

  • Lead or co-lead Kaizen activities targeting opportunities for improvement throughout the organization.

  • Identify areas for mistake-proofing (poke-yoke). Work with Engineering/Maintenance to build jigs, fixtures if need arises.

  • Lead CI and manufacturing projects change implementations by using ECN’s to make product design improvement system changes. 

  • Sustaining product engineering activities by evaluating and implementing any process and line layout changes required. 

  • Lead in the knowledge, application and deployment of woodshop based CNC equipment.

  • Work Environment: Requires regular interaction within normal office environment as well as furniture manufacturing environments including cutting, sewing, upholstery, wood fabrication, assembly operations, and all associated external supplier environments which includes a broad array of manufacturing environments.
